James wright lived to see his original airplane design be turned into a weapon of war.

Pretty damn sure the Russians invented the bomber plane during WW1 actually.
That would make them part of 'the rest of us' that worked out how to do it then, also it was the Italians, they threw grenades out of the plane. Bulgarians came up with the first bomber as we would recognise it.
Fix-the-spade is right about this.

OT: Joseph Nicéphore Niépce who created the photograph, must be ashamed of what photography has become today. And by that, I mean the people who take poorly thought out pictures, make them black and white, and consider them classy.

Alexander Graham Bell apparently hated the telephone, and refused to be in the same room as one on more than one occasion. The fact that they are now ubiquitous to modern life would horror him I believe.
he didn't invent that. he worked at a patenting office, and stole the idea from someone else, the name of whom escapes me. however, whoever it was died before the matter could be brought to trial.

i suspect a guilty conscience was what upset him so much.
I believe no one has ever invented anything. My mistake.

Nah, He did drown us all after all.
Hey, at least he gave us a rainbow afterwards. That made everything better.

Charles Darwin. He didn't really invent anything, but his theory of evolution has led to one of the biggest arguements between religion and science ever, and both sides of the arguement are being led by people who have little to no idea of what they're talking about.

Evolution does not disprove God. The Catholic Church has not officially rejected evolution in centuries. Evolution is not a fact. It is a theory, that has not been proven at all, and is actually just as likely as creationism when you get right down to it (Coming from the sense of observing what makes sense about both as opposed to the flaws in each one's arguement). The only Christians who reject evolution are fundamentalists and their bastard children: the creationists. Most scientists have some form of religion, including those who believe in the theory of evolution. Stop the pointless bickering you idiots!

For the record, I'm a Theistic Buddhist.

It doesn't appear to me that you have any better idea of what you're talking about... than either side.

I'm extremely surprised no one has mentioned Benjamin Franklin and the Post Office. Hundred bucks says that if we revived him and told him how that was doing, he'd kick the bucket right then and there. Cookie for reference.

Lost credibility right there. In science, a theory is an accepted fact that has been proven through countless studies. Take, the theory of gravity for instance. The more you know.....

Although I do agree with you that both sides should both stop being such idiots

Edit: Slightly ninja'd there. My first one, is that a tear i feel comming on?

True, "Law" was the word I was looking for. It's not a scientific law. Although, through that qualification, I don't know how evolution is a theory. No one's even proven it. They've prvided evidence for it, but they've never proven it.

Uh, says who? There've been plenty of studies (and I'm talking decades long studies involving bacteria) that not only have proven evolution is possible, but that it happens.

What you're thinking of is whether or not humans evolved from some other organism, as there is not a complete fossil record linking any ancestor of humans to humans. The whole "missing link" debacle.

Nikola Tesla I believe would be angry.

Because everyone thinks that fucking hack Thomas Edison invented the light bulb.
Imagine how different life would be if Nikola Tesla was living now. The man was a visionary, pretty much ahead of his time. The world wasn't ready for Nikola Tesla.

I doubt it, just look at all the porn they've given us!
although that could be part of your argument, it is obvious then that you wear dresses and live in an Amish community

OT: they guy who invented 4Chan (his name escapes me now) he has actually said that he's sad at what it has become but he refuses to get rid of it because it's so hilarious!

A guy called Thomas Midgely was a person mentioned on QI and he might just take the cake on this one.

He wanted to stop an engine car knocking and played around with some chemicals to put in petrol. He found that LEAD did the job perfectly and it caught on. 50 years of adding lead to the world's petrol followed. Then, he invented the CFCs that they used in freezers, that also rip through the ozone. Genius at the time, one of the most tragic scientists in history now.

Wow, my brain hurts after pulling that thought out of my mind...
Yes but he wouldn't hate what his work has become; he knew exactly what he was doing with leaded petrol but just didn't care, even when the workers were dropping like flies from lead poisoning he was leading the "lead is harmless" campaign.

You're correct. Philo Farnsworth apparently stated exactly that he thought television had become used in the wrong way.
no I think your mistaken
professor Farnsworth invented the What-if machine

I'm gonna go with Al Gore and all of his bullshit, ba-zing

you all fail science forever. Don't EVER call a theory 'fact'.
What you meant is that the hypothesis made by darwin has been corroborated many times. That still doesn't really make it a scientific theory, but rather a 'metaphysical framework': since the theory of evolution can't actually be falsified (especially when one extrapolates back in time to, say, the emergence of single-celled organisms, which we can't actually observe), it's not a very strong scientific theory per sé. It is, however, when combinated with the Mendelian theory of genetics, a very strong and convincing framework for further research into how life as we know it has come so far as it has.

Plz to be reading more Karl Popper.
