Actually, I think I prefer April Ryan. No other character in the history of... well, fiction has developed and changed so much, while still being realistic and human and extremely likeable.

Max Payne and Commander Shepard.

I like Shephard. While you can choose to be a Paragon/Renegade (if ANYONE says it's good/bad or good/evil I'll punch you in the face. Paragon/Renegade means Altruistic/Pragmatic, not Patron Saint of Everything/Eats Kittens), the base personality stays the same, so everyone's Commander plays out a little bit differently while remaining similar.

Max Payne? I like his story in itself, and the games are among my favourites, but I got pretty tired of his monologues.
"As I lazily shuffled through the cold Shakesperian tempest of pitch-black New York City during a night that reminded me of a limping dog shuffling through the garbage cans of more fortunate denizens for something to stay alive just a bit longer, I spotted a black figure, like a dancing Valkyrie beckoning to me to come and be taken away to Valhalla. The shape loomed hazily over me, like a sign of things to come growing more and more fuzzy.
