Did no one else read the title and think, "Well, shotguns are usually pretty powerful, but I don't think they could beat an axe that's also on fire."

Anyone? Fire axe? An axe that's on fire? Like, magical fire of death? No?

No one?

Okay.
I was thinking an Axe that's made of fire actually...

OT: Never saw an Axe as a viable weapon in any game I've played. So the win goes to shotgun by default.

I can't think of many games where Axes are particularly powerful, and I can't think of many games where Shotguns aren't.

But speaking of swords, check out dat crit profile:

Shotguns, they tend to be seriously powerful and I've seen so many games make them effective at all ranges so you're essentially using a sniper rifle that allows for crappy accuracy.

I also hate how some devs seem to think making them a secondary weapon is a good idea, seriously, are these guys on drugs to come up with such a stupid idea?

This is compounded by the fact swords have a very high tendency to be found in the hands of the protagonist

Shotguns tend to not be all that powerful in games since game physics tend to decide that all video game shotguns shoot magical pellets that disappear into thin air after 10 feet. They may always, or almost always be one hit kills under the right circumstances (the enemy is close enough to rub their scrotum on your face), but outside of instances when the enemy is within throttling distance shotguns in games tend to be absolutely useless, and worse than their real life counterparts.
While what you say is true , fireaxes need to also be in close range . Most so because for some reason , in games characters tend to hold the Axe with two hands , one in the middle and on at the top , making the range VERY limited .

Okay.
I'll admit, the only reason I opened this thread was because I wanted to play a game with a flaming axe.

This thread has been a great disappointment.

I can't recall any game where you can kill someone with a fire axe from any direction in one hit, but I can think of plenty where a shotgun would get the job done. Also - Shotguns can still be devastating from short range, while fire axes are only useful in point blank.

This isn't a question of which would win in a fight, but which tends to be the most powerful weapon in video games. Both are staples of horror-survival and zombie games.

So, which do you guys feel is consistantly the most powerful, most devastating weapon in gaming?
As both a close range, I would give it to the shotgun because the fireaxe needs some muscle behind it, the shotgun is point and click.

Also, IRL, shotguns are much more deadly at further range than what you usually see in videogames, in games its meant to make it somewhat more balanced. But with a full choke on a 12 gauge pump, you not only take off the zombie's head that 15 feet infront of you, you take off the heads of the next 3 zombies behind that one. Whats the fireaxe do, Hmm? Sure as shit doesnt do that.

Vampire: The Masquerade anyone?

Fire axes were awesome purely by virtue of their in-game description:

"Truly, a weapon for madmen. Who else would attack fire with a blade?"

Fire axes win for hilarity - be an invisible vampire, go behind someone and take a baseball swing at their necks! Whee!

Well, the shotgun generally wins but if you take the question to general gaming then the melee weapons tend to be overpowered so there is room for a fire axe to be the strongest.

Hope that clears that up ;p

Shotguns.

Example: Arkham Horror, a cooperative boardgame. With a bit of luck, preparation and the right character, it is possible to defeat Cthulhu, one of the hardest great old ones in the game, in ONE TURN with a shotgun. It's just that badass.

Are there many games where a Fire Axe features prominently? Because I really can't think of any
Mostly zombie games. The fire ax makes the best weapon in Dead Rising 2.
Nah, I'd say that the Knives + Boxing gloves ends up being the better choice.
You can combo and get away from bosses easier before they can hit you, whereas the Defiler (axe + sledgehammer) does more damage per hit but is slower and gets you hit more often due to the animation window. For zombie fighting, almost no weapon is better than the other due to the fact that they die in one hit from most things anyway.

An example for axe that I would like to give would be Team Fortress 2. The Axtinguisher.
If someone gets lit up by a few errant particles of flame, you can probably one shot a good 6/9 playable classes with a single hit with it. It does critical damage on burning players and the combo is faster and more reliable to pull off than praying for a random critical shotgun blast.

Though when I think of realistic scenarios (and also Hotline Miami), I'd have to give it to the shotgun.
The fire axe can indeed be dangerous, but you don't have the degree of safety that a shotgun provides.
You don't have to be point blank or fling something with super human strength to kill with the gun.

Okay.
No, that's what I thought too. Actually managed to think of several fire-enchanted axes that are really strong in their respective games, but the Swords post is what gets my vote in the end.

Also, you can't really compare the game subsets of "OP shotguns" and "OP fire axe" against each other unless they happen to coincide, and I legitimately can't think of any games that have both. Well, TF2, but there are multiple different fire axes and shotguns, and...well, I guess Pyro is pretty damn strong, but Pyros get both weapons, so there's really not much to compare.
