I'm not too familiar with Gundams, so i don't know how to feel.

Ya I got it too. They're pretty badass. Check out Endless waltz, you can probably download it somewhere. The story's are ridiculously convoluted but the mech combat is amazing to watch, especially in the climax.

Still shocked there's no one coming up with Gurren Laagen.

They tried to get back to the book in the third movie with the Marauder suits but it was still far from being the one man army that the suits in the book were.
