I remember watching the Pokémon cartoon as a kid, but I don't think I've ever played the games. I've been hearing about them, and now I'm interested. I've got a DSi and I know a shop nearby selling a Gameboy for cheap. So, the question is: Which Pokémon game would you recommend to someone who's never played Pokémon?

I would recommend getting
Blue
Yellow
Silver
Ruby

Those should keep you busy.
Actually, Heart Gold & Soul Silver (You only need one, I reccomend Silver because it is what I have) are really good remakes of Gold and Silver.

Get the remakes of gold and silver, heart gold and soul silver, they are the best and they are the most modern so have all the best features.

The first game that comes to mind is Silver or Gold, however since they were re-made I would recommend heartgold or soulsilver instead.

You get the new.

And a new version of the old.
Yeah, this is probably the best answer for someone without history in Pokemon.

(if you ever get a gamecube get Colloseum & Gale of darkness)

I second this and try out one of the pokemon ranger games as they give you a bit more to do during battles, something I thought was boring, having owned and played at least one game from every generation.

I'd recommend Emerald purely for the best endgame. That's what you're going to spend the most time on, after all. But you may want to wait for the new black/white.

If you want a total introduction, play either the original Red/Blue, or the GBA remakes Fire Red and Leaf Green.

Heart Gold/Soul Silver are the newest, and probably best games so far.

Definately get the remakes over the older ones, as a lot of issues were fixed and many new features added.

I hear the new Black/White games coming out next year were designed to introduce new people to the games.

This order.

Red
Yellow
Gold
Crystal

Stop playing
Take out crystal and its exactly what should be done. Or substitute Red with Blue and Gold with Silver, if you wish.

The first ones, either red or blue (or yellow). Those are the most classic. Silver and gold are good too, but after that the games sort of just tread old ground and the designers started running out of good ideas for monsters.

Red/Blue Or FireRed/LeafGreen remakes
Gold/Silver Or HeartGold/SoulSilver remakes

The remakes are gonna get you balance changes, updated interface, and more pokemon to catch/fight.

If you like these try the newer ones which aren't remakes.

I would like to recommend this because it will have you playing years on end, hell the DS ones still can't hit my end game spot.

Yellow, Fire Red or Leaf Green, Heart Gold or Soul Silver, Platinum and Emerald is pretty much the best version of each region(plus Yellow because Yellow kicks ass.)

I definitely recommend HG/SS since the Pokewalker is a unique way to get some rare Pokemon and Platinum for an excellent romp of the Sinnoh region.
