I like the Warhammer 40K setting. Mostly because it is filled with unimaginal horrors and SPESS MAHREENS!

In terms of looks, I'd have to go with medieval or steampunkish fantasy. Games like FFIX, and Oblivion have amazingly well realized worlds. In terms of story, however, i would have to say Sci-Fi. Both settings have the capacity to tell any story they want (they are fantasy and can use majic/tech to get around the impossible), but swords and sorcery fantasy tends to repeat or at least borrow heavily from Tolkiens world. This is all a generalization I'm sure everyone can think of loads games that break the mould, it just seems to me that Sci-Fi settings have less of an obligation to conform to a pre-existing idea.

I love both, actually. I'm a Sci-Fi geek, but in gaming I also adore the fantasy settings. Impossible to pick, in my case.
That's why Stargate is awesome.

I'm the same really, but am a sucker for outer space. I do enjoy the aspect of Tolkienesque fantasy though, as I enjoy exploring terrain and foraging for treasure immensely.

I started my interest in science fiction and fantasy with sword and sorcery, for me science fiction and space fantasy came somewhat later. I love them both, but right now tend to be interested in Science Fiction more due to the idea that it's "the romance of the future" so to speak, and I like reading about how people think things will develop, and how they might work. Especially when you consider that guys like Jules Verne wound up being surprisingly on target with how a lot of things actually developed (though he was also wrong about a lot of them as well).

I guess I'd say Science Fiction nowadays, almost painful to say it though since I do still love my sword and sorcery.

Hi-tech but not in space.
I believe the term you are looking for is Cyberpunk [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberpunk]. A setting which I rather like myself.
I guess but it has to have magic as well.

Yeah I can dig the fantasy future settings of FFX and FFXIII.

I'm bored to tears with the Medieval style settings. I'll still play a game in these setting if it's good obviously, but it tends to get my eyes rolling.

Yeah Medieval. There would be animals to hunt, and if it is how the douchey people portray medieval these days (see Legend of the Seeker for further reference), then there would be lots of... women... I won't into detail. (Are we alowed to use the term "busty" on here?)

Either that or Deus Ex style setting. Where it's the future but everything is intact and... futuristic.

I prefer the sci-if fantasy setting of Mass Effect although I'm okay with magic during this era too (i'm not counting biotics as magic for sake of discussion).

I think a Fable 2 style fantasy setting would be kinda cool. You have the fantasy staples, the trolls, goblins, etc. But you also have badass clockwork weapons and other steam-punky stuff. That would be the kind of setting I'd like to live in.

Swords and Magic. Elves and Orcs.

Magic does EVERYTHING.

You need an explanation? MAGIC.

I think sci-fi is okay, but i really prefer medieval settings.

Swords are so much more fun!
I'd agree here. Give me swords over lasers anyday. I also like airships, so I suppose I'm closer to steampunk, or a Final Fantasy setting.

Medieval: Lord of the rings, no question
Sci-Fi: Ooooh, Mass Effect if one of the creators implemented a more Hitchhiker's Guide feel to the next one, not zaney as such, just more human and less Sterile and military.

And if the OP permits a combo option : Star Wars, incredible space and other-worldy feel of adventure and politics with the brute tribal force (Jedi vs. Sith) of a more medieval feel.

I quite like the alternate modern day, or near-future settings.
Its not quite fantasy, but the sort of environment like [PROTOTYPE]

Either that, or the awesome world of metal from Brutal Legend.
