If we're talking actual 'fantasy', I prefer the kind without magic or with it being a trait feared. (Eg: The Night Angel Trilogy books by Brent Weeks)

In the Sci-Fi setting, Mass Effect really fucking rocks out with its cock out. Humanity being the minor player emphasizes the feeling of emptiness and infinity that space brings.

Well, I'd say I'd go for the sci-fi setting because there's more originality.

I mean, Fantasy is great when they create stuff other than just the average Orcs, elves, and dwarfs, and even then, there has to be something ridiculous about something otherwise the series gets boring.

I mean, I know that Orcs, dwarfs and elves are like the norm in fantasy now, but it's gotten to the point to where I read this book called 'orcs' in which it was naming out race after race like the author was just getting his info from a D&D book. Go for originality, make the orcs pig-men like they were used to, or elves back to their mischievous selves, or Dwarfs as accountants or some weird thing like that. Make a straight forward fantasy with one thing goofy and suddenly you have a good fantasy.

I prefer the typical Final Fantasy setting. Don't know what you'd class that as...

Lightning: You'd consider me medieval then?
Medievil and they also went through a bit of a steampunk phase and seam to have gone back to Sci Fi.

personaly i prefer the medieval setting with dragons and swords. i don't know why, it's just a preferance.

so tell me word readers, which do you prefer?
Also Sci Fi and Fantasy are completely different. Also Fallout 3 is post apocalyptic/50s style. Do you mean what kind of setting do you like RPG games?

Have you been doing that Lightning thing the whole time?

Because if you're only doing that in light of the Caulumon thing, it's not very original.

OT: I love medieval settings. There's just something about swords and magic that really keeps me happy.

A combination of sci-fi and fantasy: you start off in a world run by magic, and later on you realize that magic is just very advanced nanotechnology. The sparkle and lens flare whenever you cast a spell? Nanites.

I really like steam-punk settings, sadly there are so few games that use it.

Oblivion/ Dragon Age - Fantasy
Fallout 3 - Science fiction
Final Fantasy - Science Fantasy

Oblivion and Fallout aren't both fantasy....

Aside from that....Medieval all the way

Medieval low fantasy, like Oblivion---indeed, the main reason I prefer the Elder Scrolls series to Fallout 3 is the setting. I love Fallout's gameplay but I'm biased against guns.

I usually enjoy a more Cyberpunk feel (like Ghost in the Shell) or at least a high tech setting. Magitech is also pretty good (Tales Series) and Post-Apocalypse is good if implemented well (Digital Devil Saga, but Fallout 3 was far too dull and boring).

The only one I really hate is the "Standard Fantasy Setting"/Medieval Setting. Whenever I see a game like Dragon Age Origins or Oblivion I can be sure that the landscape and monster design will be completely uninspired and everyone will talk in a horrifyingly bad British accent. Dragon Quest 8 also counts because although the art was anime-esque, the medieval setting and horrible accents remained.

Sci-fi has the likes of Stargate, Mass Effect, Warhammer 40k and Star wars (though this is really a combo of the two). Hard to beat that.

It's the clear winner in my book. Not to mention your "fantasy" settings, 9 times out of 10, are just ripping off Tolkien. Elves as archers who talk to trees and Dwarves who live under mountains and who like using axes, you say? How original. Still enjoy the genre though. love dragon age and elder scrolls.

on the otherhand the final fantasy and the steam punk settings just don't appeal to me. I'm all for a combination of Medieval fantasy and Sci-fi, but I just think that star wars did that best. That, and the art style of the two is very off-putting to me. Steampunk more so than FF.
