This may seem like an odd topic but I recently found my old Game Boy Color, but cannot find my old Red version anywhere. My girlfriend found an old Gold version for me to use but I have never played gold or silver, have no idea which pokemon to use, or to try and collect in order to beat the game's gyms. Any advice on which pokemon to use or any other strategies would be most helpful :)

UPDATE: I went with Cyndaquil which seemed to be the majority's choice. It is freakin' awesome! May not look as cool as the original fire type starter charmander but coupled with a level 13 Pidgey, my level 14 evolved Cyndaquil (can't remember evolved name) has blitzed through the first gym and "bellsprout tower". Now I just need a pokemon capable of flash to get through the cave; HELP!

I personally like Chicorita but they're all good. The first gym is fly type gym so grass alone is not good in that case you must catch something else before the gym. I can't give advice on the whole game but catch stuff you think look cool that works for me ^^

Pick whichever one you think looks coolest. It's pokemon, you don't need all that much in the way of strategy to beat the game.

Cyndaquil is the second best starter ever, just behind Charmander. I always used him and had no trouble getting through any of the gyms.

On the Gold Version, don't pick Grass unless you want to be in for a challenge early-game. First Gym is Flying-type, but fortunately you can get a Geodude fairly easily by that point. Second Gym is Bug-Type, and let me tell you, if you don't have something to deal with the Scyther there, it will take you apart with its Fury Cutter, a Bug-type move that is super-effective against Grass-types. Cyndaquil or Totodile would be your best options, with Cyndaquil being a bit better early-game because of the aforementioned Bug Gym.

I used Cyndaquil, then leveled the first thing I caught (a level 2 Pidgey) up to 100. Whatever you choose, you'll soon get something more powerful anyway, and that damn rival trainer will get the advantage over your pokemon regardless.

Basically, pick at random.

Cyndaquil was my personal preference. Don't think of your starter logically, go with your favorite in my opinion! XD

I personally like Totodile the most, but Cyndaquil is a good choice, because it's far easier to catch a good water type pokemon than it is to catch a fire-type.

As long as you don't pick the crocodile guy. Really high base attack, but special At. sucks so all his actual water attacks will be shit. Other stats are average. I'd go with the grass one, because even though the first 2 gyms will suck, It's the only good pure grass type in the game. Although certainly don't get turned off from the little fire dude, He's pretty good too, it's just that there is a few other fire guys you can get instead instead. Mainly, Magmar or Ho-Oh (the bird guy on the cartridge) and arcanine once you get to ... spoiler avoidance land (and then theres always the legendary dog, but can't really count on capturing him early in the game)

I recently started playing silver again and I went with totodile. No particular reason other then, he's my favorite of the 3.

I usually stay away from the fire pokemon as in the red/blue versions they would struggle late-game, but i suppose by that point i'd have a Gyrados (excuse spelling) or some sort of game ender along those lines.

LOL sounds like a good strategy to me! Totodile by far looks the coolest out of the starter 3!

Are the legendary pokemon the same as in previous games in the way that you only get one chance to catch them? Also if pokemon from red/blue are in gold/silver, are ones like mewtwo and dragonite available? They were toooo good.

Personally, I chose Cyndaquil. Fire-types are a lot harder to come by than grass- or water-types, and the only other choice in a fire-type that you'll have for a while is Growlithe. There are better offensive grass-types than Chikorita, like Bellsprout, and there are more than enough water Pokemon to replace Totodile. Alternatively, you can always glitch the game into getting all three starters, anyway, thus rendering the choice moot.

i personally went for cyndaquil, i normally choose the grass type, but i just really hated the look of chicorita: we went from plant/dinosaur hybrid to a kitten-thing with a pearl necklace and a leaf on it's head
anyway, for gold/silver/crystal, i would advise cyndaquil, but you should really just go with who you prefer

Ish. The new legendary birds are one shot only at the top/bottom of a dungeon. They also have these legendary dogs now, which once you release them run around to different patches of grass every time you change a route. So you occasionally run into them in random encounters, and then they just run away. The legendaries from Pokemon 1 are only available if you trade them in. And most of the ones from R/B/Y are in it except for: the original starters, the fossil guys, the legendaries, and then the few that you can only get on the other version (vulpix springs to mind).

yes, i think all of the old pokemon are still available (if not, then almost) and yes, you only get one chance to catch the two bird legendaries and suicine, but raikou and entei wil run away to the other side of the world every time the fight lasts more than a single f*cking round (although you can check the pokedex to see where they went), but once you've actually beaten any of them, they will never reappear

I'd say Cyndaquil as well, as Fire types typically get the most lovin' during the games. Was never really fond of Gen II games or their Gen IV remakes though.

And be wary of the old cartridges if the battery hasn't been changed. That can cause some bad problems when it starts to fail.
