I went with totodile and he was absolutely amazing. The general consensus in competitive battling is that he is superiour to Cyndaquil too.

As long as you don't pick the crocodile guy. Really high base attack, but special At. sucks so all his actual water attacks will be shit. Other stats are average. I'd go with the grass one, because even though the first 2 gyms will suck, It's the only good pure grass type in the game. Although certainly don't get turned off from the little fire dude, He's pretty good too, it's just that there is a few other fire guys you can get instead instead. Mainly, Magmar or Ho-Oh (the bird guy on the cartridge) and arcanine once you get to ... spoiler avoidance land (and then theres always the legendary dog, but can't really count on capturing him early in the game)
Are the legendary pokemon the same as in previous games in the way that you only get one chance to catch them? Also if pokemon from red/blue are in gold/silver, are ones like mewtwo and dragonite available? They were toooo good.
The legendary pokemon were caught the same way all the way back to B/G/R/Y except wandering ones. Mewtwo isn't in the original pokemon GSC but you can get dratini which evolves into Dragonite.

Cyndaquil is pretty strong against most of the first trainers you will find, and I believe there will be some time before you get a chance to catch another fire Pokémon. But in all fairness, you shouldn't have much problem regardless of your choice. I myself usually go with Totodile, since his final stage looks coolest.

I went with Chicorita and I did just fine. I don't remember it being that challenging.
But now I'd go with Cyndaquil.
Fire starters are always best.
Always.
You don't beat a Typhlosion, Typhlosion just lets you win.

Seriously though, the first 2 Gen's starters are all totally badass, so you'll do just fine with any of the three.

Good fire pokemon are usually hard to come by. I went for Cyndaquill for that reason. If you going to have ok Fire pokemon, like a Houndoom or something for example, then I'd go Chickorita, cause it's final evolution is a bad assed grass type.

If you do go fire though, watching out for Whitney and her Miltank and it's fucking Rollout... that *****... SO ANNOYING >.<

I chose Totodile when I last played Gold (about two months ago :p )

Feraligatr is a beast....At level 40 I think, one-shotted Lance's Dragonite with Ice punch. Granted it was a crit, but hey.

To be honest the gym leaders and especially the Elite Four are way too easy on Gold and Silver, so with any starter you'll do fine.

I've found this to be true in all pokemon games...

Water type pokemon are a dime a dozen, you'll find plenty in game, not need for a water starter...

Grass type are also super plenteful, and reletively useless IMO. Grass is a weak type IMO.

So get the fire type. It's always the best choice IMO.

if you go with the grass you can catch both a Mareep and a Geodude to take on the first gym, but Victribell is better than Megainium.

If you go with the fire you can bulldoze through multiple gyms. the bug, steel, and ice are weak to fire.

If you go with water, there are a lot of waters. Octillary, Mantine, and Magikarp's evolution are better.

But go with what you like really

Gold/Silver are some of the only Pokemon games where I consider all 3 to be awesome.
It comes down to personal preference in the end, but I'd recommend either Chikorita or Cyndaquil, probably Cyndaquil to be honest.

Totodile is kind of broken in the original, as he has a pretty mediocre special attack, which is bad for water types.

So, considering Typhlosion has the exact same stats as a charizard, with a more offensive movepool, along with it doesn't have a double weakness to rock, can blow through the second, sixth, and seventh gyms with no difficulty, i would have to say cyndaquil

This may seem like an odd topic but I recently found my old Game Boy Color, but cannot find my old Red version anywhere. My girlfriend found an old Gold version for me to use but I have never played gold or silver, have no idea which pokemon to use, or to try and collect in order to beat the game's gyms. Any advice on which pokemon to use or any other strategies would be most helpful :)
Cyndaquil is best at the start, he's very strong and doesn't have any type disadvantages against the early gyms, and has an advantage against the second. Croconaw has type advantages against the later gym leaders, and also doesn't have many disadvantages early. Chicorita has a type disadvantage against the first gym, and is a bit weak early game, but he's the best against the elite four. That was what I was told by several websites when I googled it years ago. Cyndiquil is the easiest, then croconaw, and then Chicorita is hardest, but Chicorita is the best against the elite four.

I like to grab Cyndaquil when I play gold because there are hardly any fire types in the game. The first one you can get is growlithe, or maybe ponyta, both after the third gym. I usually play crystal, so I could be wrong, but I believe you can grab a polywhirl right in the the city with the first gym if you're there at night, and I know you can grab a bellsprout, before the first gym. You can also find oddish, right after the second gym.

tl;dr: My suggestion is to just take the type that you like, all of them are pretty good. My first playthrough of gold, I used croconaw and no other pokemon and destroyed the whole game.

Oh, one more thing, in violet city, at night, I believe you can capture a ghastly, which I strongly recommend. Not sure, I play more crystal than gold, but I think they're there in gold too.

I think in gen two, water was based of the att stat, but I'm not sure at all. Even if it is spec attack, it doesn't matter, give him slash, and crunch and he's still one of the best pokemon you're going to get.

Water bas based off of Special until generation IV. But yeah, slash and crunch pretty much what made him useable. But you don't get those for a while. Kind of sucks that you can't really bother with water attacks with him.

i would say Totodile or Cyndaquil. i personally like Totodile better appearance wise but the Cyndaquil is not to bad either. i never really liked Chickorita
EDIT: my recommendations are more of a personal preference then anything else. i don't really know much when it comes to stats

Totodile- The noob pokemon, can learn most of the HMs, learns moves quicker and boasts the best stats of the three earlier on in the game

Cyndaquil- My personal favourite, sucks at first but its final evolution is statistically the strongest of the bunch late-game.

Chikorita- The Charmander equivalent for Gold/Silver in that it creates the biggest challenge for the player, especially earlier on with the first two qym leaders having the type advantage (flying/bug).

All three are useful though, as is the case with all pokemon starters.

Good call, now I remember I think the earliest a decent fire type shows up is Magmar at Ecureak or whatever that ghost gym leader's town was called.
