I'd like to get to know the old Thief games before I buy the new one that'll be released soon, but I don't know which ones are important, and if I can skip some of them. Will it be a bad idea to only play the most recent one, "Deadly Shadows"?
Thief 2 is definitely the best of the series. Thief The Dark Project is good but has some levels in tombs and such which involve more running from zombies than stealth. And Deadly Shadows has some mixed opinions about it. Its good from what I've played of it despite the smaller levels but the game is a nightmare to run on modern pc's even with some fan made fixes, which meant I never could finish it.
Echoing what Artificially Prolonged said, Deadly Shadows has engine issues much like the oft-decried Deus Ex: Invisible War (since they both use the same engine) that make it a massive exercise in futility trying to get it running well on modern systems.
Other than that I can't really make a recommendation, I've never played the first two.
Deadly Shadows was the first I played and it was alright. Not great but still fun. I especially recommend it for the Shalebridge Cradle level - it's awesome. But I can't really compare it to the first two - I played a bit of them but not enough to fully compare them against Deadly Shadows. For what it's worth, they do seem a bit more interesting from the beginning but I've yet to finish the games.
While I own all three of the original games, I've probably enjoyed the second one the most. I can't really explain why, but it just seems to be the one I've had the most fun with.
