The Gerudo Valley theme from Zelda:OoT was the song that first made me take notice of how great video game soundtracks could be. While I have heard better songs since then, that one will always have a place in my memory as one of the best. I have a really great orchestrated version of it.
I think 3 of the more recent soundtracks I've really enjoyed are the soundtracks to the Phoenix Wright trilogy. I couldn't get the Steel Samurai theme out of my head for days the first time I heard it!
I am going to go with two tracks here. The first is the Outcast Main Theme, which is easy enough to youtube, or download from the games website.
The second one can't be found on youtube, it is the song cleverly titled Battle4 from Jade Empire.
I accidentally figured out how to play that on keyboard lol. Just playing around, and played the opening bar.
I would have to say Portal, but the Prince of Persia music is brutally heavy. And you can rely on the Tony Hawks games to have some good stuff, Motorhead, 3 Inches Of Blood etc.
This thread kinda surprises me, being one of the old dudes on the forum. Usually (for me, that is) that question would have sparked a bunch of NES titles with Mega Man 2 at the top. Guess times change. Of course, many old titles had scores that where actually better than the game itself (Speedball [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nof7TbvFMC8], anyone?).
But this one is really quite special, in my opinion perhaps the most inventive use of simple harmonics and white noise ever. It also sets an atmosphere that more or less defines the game. The first level has a track that really gets you eager for the rest of the game, which to me is perfect scoring. And here it is:
Another piece of music that really blew my mind was this one. So perfect.
for me, definately the music during Carnival Night Act 2 on Sonic & Knuckles. I got stuck on that Barrel for so long as a kid, it became ingrained into my mind.
