I noticed that there's two main types of horror.

The more psychological one, where you get shivers down your spine, that creeping sensation, and you may or may not know what's there. It messes with your head.

Or when something sudden or shocking happens that you totally didn't expect, and it makes you jump.

I much prefer the psychological kind.

If my head isn't thoroughly messed with and having me flip out at everything, then it wasn't worth it.

Alien will always be scarier than Aliens.

Your mind can scare you far more than the latter.
Aliens is generally advertised as SciFi/Action, not SciFi/Horror like Alien... but yeah... I still totally agree with you.

I find that horror movies that leave things up to my imagination tend to be the ones that unsettle me the most, which in turn makes them more memorable to me.

Horror movies that are nothing but filler between jump scares and/or gore don't really do much for me. Especially with regard to slasher flicks. I freaking hate that whole sub-genre.

I also prefer the more psychological horror because any movie can have jump scares and to base an entire movie on just jump scares gets rather dull and repetitive rather quickly. To experience horrors that are not made clear or simply boggle the mind into a state of panic is where the true essence of horror lies. You can not be sure if what you perceive to be is actually true or not, and if you leave with a new sense of nervousness towards the unknown, the psychological horror has done it's job right.

I always jump a flipping mile when things jump out in films. And they always bloody play a really loud noise at the same time, but the fear comes when you know its going to happen but you're not sure when. After it happens I just feel annoyed.

Alien didn't scare me, but I think that's because I basically knew what would happen before I watched it, spoilers being inevitable when a film is both a classic and older than yourself.

I was genuinely scared watching the Doctor Who episode "The Empty Child". Some combo of gas-mask zombies and that creepy child's voice going "Are you My Mummy?" had me shitless.

So that's a third category for you, the slow inevitable tide of death that is zombies, which whilst being neither suspenseful nor particularly jumpy, are nevertheless very menacing.
(unless its just me being a wimp)

The psychological kind, of course. Hordes of zombies don't scare me, they gross me out. Jump scares make me "Goddammit, I wish they'd stop doing that. It's getting a tad annoying." After all, you may be prepared for everything, but no means can you ever be prepared for nothing.

I'd have to say the psychological one. The feeling lasts longer, and has greater effect. Well, on me at least. Jumpy horror is just too short lived, and easily achieved.

Paranoia fuel, definately. Anything that really forces you to think "what if that happened to me" and most importantly, makes it uncomfortably plausible.

The jumpy kind of horror gets me. The psycho stuff I can handle, because I'll be able to think it over, whereas the sudden stuff gets me straight away.

Ps. Capcha's should not be allowed while you're drunk.

The psychological one although mixing it with some shock horror never hurts. Gorefest horror doesn't do much for me.

I love a good psychological scare. I don't mind movie that make you jump because someone was standing behind a door suddenly pops out. But that gets old after a while. The kind of movie that leave you scared to go upstairs to the toilet is the kinda horror movie i want to watch.

Though i have to say i can't stand stupid mind-numbing gore movies or just sick movie. The likes of the hills have eyes makes me sick and I can't watch them. Oh god especially Human Centipede, i nearly threw up watching that.

Psychological because you're often left with a haunting image. I like psychological films of any genre I like trying to guess the twist(s) before the film reveals it.

Saw SCP on Pewdiepie's Channel, i think it was pretty clever of the game that it FORCED you too look at the monster to get past it, and has blinking in it so that you cant just infinitly stare at it and keep it frozen (It does a minor teleport towards you when you blink).

Psycological is definitely scarier, as the scare lasts longer rather than the sudden jump of the shock type. Plus jump scares can become over used and thus render them not scary anymore.

- Psycological does really well for the player, but not so much for the people watching him play

- Jump scares suprise everyone (that isnt expecting it), although getting older faster.

Three types of terror:

Gore, when a severed head rolls down the stairs.

Horror, when you see things that should not exist, like wolves the size of Elephants, an animated corpse.

Terror, the feeling you have when you see things that seem familiar, but you know are off. It's when you hear a voice behind you and when you turn around, no one is there.

I prefer Horror.

I prefer psychological horror. The type of horror that implants an idea into your mind and lets you run wild with it.

However there's nothing greater than a 'walk-through haunted house' and experiencing the jump scares and loud, brazen horror first hand and up close.
