Which usually turns out worse? A movie based on a video game or a video game based on a movie?

There is something worse, but it's only happened twice to my knowledge. That is the game based on the movie based on the game.

Street Fighter: The Movie was a game based on the Street Fighter movie based on the game Street Fighter 2, and the newest Alone in the Dark game was apparently based on Uwe Boll's Alone in the Dark movie (if the plot is any indication), which was based on the original Alone in the Dark games.

And I think we know how those both turned out.

I'd say game based on a movie. Most are cheaply and hurridly produced in order to make a quick buck. Lord of the Rings, Iron Man, Superman Returns; most aren't that great. One exception includes the original Goldeneye for the N64.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie

I didn't really see them, but apparently the Resident Evil movies were good.

And I kinda liked the first Tomb Raider movie and the Mortal Kombat movies.
It's a guilty pleasure, but I also liked the first Pokemon movie (Mew vs. Mewtwo).

EDIT: Back on topic, I think more game based movies suck than do movie based games. But there are always exceptions.

My only problem w/ that movie was the change in plot from supernatural demons to a virus.

Well yes, they were shallow movies that were based on shallow games. Advent Children was weird as hell to me and I haven't seen the street fight movies. Tomb Raider and Mortal Kombat had the quality of a bad action movie.

And yes you should feel guilty for liking Pokemon movie, I know I wished I never saw it.

The resident evil movies were entertaining at least so I will change my original post.

Case in point, Hitman. Who here can honestly say they found Timothy Oliphant's 47 as cool as the Agent 47 they'd played in the games?
The same is probably true for Mark Whalberg as Max Payne, but I haven't seen it.
I saw Max Payne and you are absolutely right.

I dunno, man. The first Pokemon movie was awesome for me when I saw it because I was 11 or 12 at the time. But you are right, the Tomb Raider and MK movies were just bad action films. I still enjoy them, though; probably because I enjoy bad action movies.

I can understand how Advent Children would be weird as hell, though.

I just didn't like that the movie felt as though it was a made-for-TV movie on Sci-Fi. I couldn't help but roll my eyes at the scenes that took place from first-person, as though it were a live-action game, especially that segment towards the end. If some of you Doom fans thought that was good, that's perfectly fine. I didn't like it though.

Oh, the topic. Erm... I guess the game-to-movie transition usually ends worse. Resident Evil: Extinction was watchable, but that's about all I can think of, at least in terms of Hollywood live-action stuff. Anime like the Street Fighter movies are pretty good.

I will say movie based on game solely because goldeneye exists, even if it did come out like 2 years after the film, it shows what good they do when they don't rush it for quick and easy sales.

And here is why I hate hollywood

Super Mario Bros movie

Double Dragon movie

You liked BOTH Mortal Kombat movies? I can understand the first one because it's not really a bad movie but the second one was horrible.

I'm almost 100% sure that it will be a bad movie. The Halo movie (if it get's released) will be bad too. They will make money because there are many people who like the games but look at the Resident Evil movies.

Mostly agree, both w/ the assertion that Doom felt made-for-TV and that game-to-movie transitions usually turn out worse.

Anyway, I liked the Doom movie because it was cheesy and entertaining (the same reasons I like the Evil Dead trilogy and a bunch of other movies). Not high quality, just entertaining. That's why I didn't mention it in my first post on the this thread in response to Rankao.

Well we have had some luck in the Movie to Videogame field what with things like...

Chronicles of Riddick
Spongebob Squarepants Movie Videogame (they're supposed to be exceptionally good for kids)
Lord of the Rings: The Third Age and the two Beat Em Up tie ins.

However we have yet to see a good Videogame to Movie adaptation.
I actually thought the original Mortal Kombat (Robin Shou, Christopher Lambert) was quite good. Maybe that one is just me...

...and I don't even consider Armageddon worth the waste of fuel to burn.

Kind of. I haven't seen that one since 5th grade, so my opinion might be considered void. But I still do like the first one, and I've seen that one w/i the last couple years.
