Some good points made, but my argument is pretty simple.
If Britain had retained its empire in Africa, we wouldn't have Mugabe. I bet they're looking at Ghandi differently nowadays.
Note: Yes I am aware Ghandi was Indian.

I think the Byzantine empire was pretty cool. It was run like a massive cult.

Not really a very powerful empire, just cool.

Assyrian. First organised armies, roads (for moving armies) and general awesomeness. Probably the first big Empire.

Followed by the British, the biggest and strongest for a long time.

The Roman Republic/Empire. Caesar was a motherfucking genius. Also, the Legion's were badass and just... so good. At least until they decided to go to scythia and face guys with sickle swords (going by my military history teacher, apparently they used a sword that was like a curved claymore able to slice a legionaire in half. And thats why later roman helmets had a metal brace thing on the top to try and protect it a little bit more).

Second best: American. We dominated Spain. Then we repelled Japan.

Yeah...it might help that most of the accounts of his campaigns were written by...you've guessed it...

...he even tried to spin his brief stint in the British isles...

"For ten thousand years did the Bright Empire of Melniboné flourish, ruling the world. Ten thousand years before history was recorded-or ten thousand years after history after history had ceased to be chronicled. For that span of time, reckon it how you will, the Bright Empire had thrived.

Be hopeful, if you like, and think of the dreadful past the Earth has known, or brood upon the future. But if you would believe the unholy truth-then Time is an agony of Now, and so it will always be.

Ravaged, at last, by the formless terror called Time, Melniboné fell and new nations succeeded her. Then memory began: Ur, India, China, Egypt, Assyria, Persia, Greece, Rome-all these came after Melniboné.

But none stood for ten thousand years."

The Austro-Hungarian Empire, famous for slowly collapsing in on itself like a flan in a cupboard.

I'm not sure if the Tang dynasty of China qualifies as an empire, but if it does then that would be my choice. Some of the best poetry ever devised by humans, along with some hilarious cultural developments and an awesome Emperor.

If that didn't qualify, then the Mongolians. Those dudes were crazy. Kicking the shit out of everyone from armoured knights and pikemen to beating out enemies with firearms. All using mostly light cavalry. Very impressive. Too bad they weren't the greatest at governing; I guess living nomadic lifestyles doesn't prepare you for administration.

I think the first true empire was either the Ethiopians or the Egyptians.

And the British had more land than the Mongols ANACHRONISTICALLY. That means they never controlled all that at one time, so yeah, Genghis was better, much better. Mongols drove refugees in front of their army as human shields. The British used cow fat in their bullets they gave to Hindu sepoys. And all the rights the British empire respected only counted if you were white. Yeah they abolished slavery before everybody else, but they were vicious to the aborigines in Australia.

Best empire ever? Marcab Confederacy.
