Speaking of which, is the RROD issue already addressed in the newer-generation Xboxes?
As far as I know it hasn't, my cousin bought his original 360 from outside of the UK so it came chipped, so when the RROD occured Microsoft wouldn't repair/replace due to the void warrant. My uncle bought him a new one and 3 months down the line that RROD as well. This is recently, the replacement my uncle bought was in March 09 and it died in the end May and he's just got his replacement back.
Ouch. So getting an Xbox is still like Russian Roulette. I wonder how much hate Customer Service reps get whenever an Xbox dies...

kk, cheers guys, I'll have a look at the 20gb version, as I barely use DLC anyway. I'll use the free month of gold membership to see whether its worth paying for.

Noob question now, what is the difference between silver and gold XBL?

Everyone who has the ability to connect their Xbox to the internet (cable or wireless) has the ability to have a Silver Account: Which I believe allows you to download demos and other things from the Xbox Market Place.

Those who pay the yearly fee get Gold: Which allows everything Silver gives you but also allows you to play games online, add friends and chat to people.
Yeah, you can download demos, themes, updates etc. with Silver, you just can't play online, you need Gold for that. Which costs about 60 dollars a year, or 1 dollar and a few cents per week.

The 60gb definitely, a 20gb hard drive isn't worthwhile, and second hand xbox? bad idea!

I guess I'm lucky, I got a brand new 60gb model with 2 games for £40, I knew a guy who worked in Woolworths as it was closing down lol.

So yeah save up for a 60gb one, the bigger harddrive is needed, 20gb seems useless now, and the hardware is less likely to die on you.

Id definately go for the 60gb one - it may be more expensive but it will save the trouble of buying a new in in another while.

Yeah go with at least the 60gb. you'll want to be able to install your games to the hard drive. They load quicker and the noise from the xbox is reduced significantly because it doesnt need to spin the disc. Also since the disc isnt spinning the it won't get scratched if the system is bumped while the game is playing. It is also supposed to help with the rrod because the system heats up less when playing off off the hard drive. You might say then why can't i just get the 20gb ? It's not big enough. Games are like 5-8 Gb and you wouldnt get much on it.

Try to get a 60GB version that comes with one or two games. They should be as expensive as a normal 60GB version with the obvious benefit of the free game(s).

if your on a lower budget and don't mind getting a last-gen console, then I'd recommend a PS2... since they're cheap as dirt and have a great line up of games. Either that or a Wii (for the same reasons, except its a current-gen console)

If you REALLY want a Microsoft console, I'd say an Xbox - the 360 has a LOT of hidden expenses, since you need to buy lots of add-ons for certain things, like a battery pack, wireless internet, etc etc.
Read the first post more thoroughly please :)
I would suggest a 60gb. DO NOT get a 360 2nd hand.

Pro Value

Arcade will just waste your money on neccesary upgrades.

2nd hand just means you're getting a machine that has temporarily been fixed well enough to resell. Still a broken machine though.

Arcade, that way, when it fails you don't lose as much money.

Become familiar with this, you will probably see it soon.

(Lol I know RoD isn't as bad as people make it, but I like posting pictures :))

If you can, get an Elite. My Elite never died on me, maybe that was just luck though.
ha. i bought an elite. it died on me. not the red ring though, it just died. whenever i put a disc in it starts making grinding sounds. i never got it fixed though; its sitting in my room...somewhere. i just got an arcade 360 and attached my elite's hard drive.

Umm depends what setup you have at home and how you are with quality and noise. If you dont mind listening to the noisiest dvd tray on the planet while you game the arcade is fine.

If you dont have a HD tv or anything the arcade is fine.

If you want a bit of a quieter experience and have a HD tv you have to get the 60gig or 120gig.

Hold out for the Elite. Remember you can load games onto the HD though you still ahve to have to the disk in to play them, it cuts down on the noise of the CD spinning. the cooling system is supposed to be durable too.

We have both the regaulr and the elite. The regular XBox has been repaired once for the red ring of death and given to my son who plasys a hell of a lot more than I do. No problems so far and it's been over a year and a half.

Hello there. I have a quick question regarding the xbox.

I want to get a console with a few more games designed for gamers, as my wii has run out of games I enjoy. For the time being. So, I therefore flicked through my arogos catalogue ( I live in the U.K) and had a look at the RRP of the other consoles.

This was when I realised I wouldnt be getting a PS3 on my paper boy wages.

So, I have a quick question, should I go for the xbox arcade, the old 20gb xbox (second hand maybe?) or the 60gb xbox?

I earn £15 a week, but if I do some extra rounds (another morning and an evening) That will go up to £40 a week.

cheers guys.

rosac

p.s Any trolls that answer the above question with "None, get a ps3/pc" are idiots, and have clearly not read my post at all.
Save up for that Elite. I've had no problems with mine, whilst other people are suffering from the Ring of Death.

I think I heard that silver is being slowly phased out (don't quote me on this though), and that sooner or later most new themes and demo's etc are going to be gold only.

OT: Buy the cheapest one you can find that still has a hard drive. Arcade just isn't worth it.
