Thank you everyone for replying to this thread.

so i've been playing x-com 1 as the majority suggests (in lieu of studying but thats a tale for another time). So can i ask is there a manual or some sort of opening tips for someone starting up with x-com (not a walk-through mind you). Otherwise ill have to play via trial and error, which resulted in me losing half my squad due to inability to find my "time units".

First one with XcomUtil, but barely. Have yet to play the second, and the third...

If it wasn't for a few glitches with real-time, balance issues with turn-based, and being in many ways unfinished? Third would be my favourite by a mile. That's Apocalypse, by the way.

Never played Interceptor, but I've finished Enforcer. Now, I'll probably get lynched for saying it, but I really enjoyed that game. Yes, it's a terrible game. That said, it's a LOT of fun. More than I've had with quite a few games recently. I may even replay it at some point with different weapons or something. Honestly, while it's not X-COM in any way, I liked it.

I have similar hopes for the new game. My end opinion of it will, in the end, probably be "this is a fun game, I just wish they never called it X-COM". After all, the namesake organization doesn't even exist in the new game.

I'm amazed at your ability to play a game that doesn't even have a concrete release date yet.
Are you really going to say that you don't think that the new xcom is gonna be awesome.
BTW: which would you preffer; an old turn-based game from the 90's(hit or miss) or a brand new game with innovative gameplay which also takes another perspective into account to revolutionize an already great formula?
fuck yeah I want another turn based game, you know how long some of us have been waiting for another real xcom game? besides the new one isnt an xcom game, its some fps with so far nothing in common except a deep hope to annoy people who enjoyed xcom by making an fps out of it that has nothing in common with it. They might as well have called it topgear since it looks like its got about as much in common with xcom as it does with a racing game

in summary, I want a fucken turn based top down xcom

First, nothing's awesome until it comes out. Remember The Last Airbender and how amazing it was going to be?

Second, what particular innovations are you talking about? Please, be specific, especially when you say they will "revolutionize" something. What's brand new about it other than the release date.

Third, yes I would prefer to play an old turn-based game from the 90's. Ideally, it'd be a TBS from the 10's, but I'll take what I can get.

It's not nearly as good as the original games, but UFO: Alien Invasion is a fan-made modern take on the franchise. Still far from complete, but it's actually quite a solid game even in its beta state and also completely free.

Only major drawback is that it doesn't feature destructible terrain like the originals. Everything else however is golden!

I was going to say UFO:Aftermath is probably the best one for a new player to start with.

That said, UFO Defense is the best, UI issues and all. If they just remade that with a little better interface, that'd be perfect, and that's what the UFO series should have been. Problem is, Hasborg isn't gonna just hand over the license they wrecked.

Ew, the first post went pro-new X-com. That's disturbing. You can't call the new X-Com innovative yet. It hasn't been released and they refuse to release much info about the plans for the game. So far all we do know is that they are changing EVERYTHING so calling it X-Com would be like going ahead and calling the movie "District 9" "Halo" anyways. (It was originally supposed to be Halo the movie FYI.)

Fans would not like it as the idea behind it is not the story presented in the game. Thus calling the new X-com "X-com" a questionable tactic. It seems like the common tactic of a publisher buying the rights to release what should be a new IP as a sequel to pull from an existing fanbase. I won't say the new X-Com will be a bad game but I am personally going to approach it as a new IP and not in anyway related to X-Com.

Building laser pistols is the best source of income. You make good profit and you should never have your engineers idle if you can produce them. Beyond that, really it is up for grabs as to what tactics you use. Throwing grenades and high explosives will raise a charactor's strength fast. When designing your bases, keep your general stores near your living quarters so that if you get attacked you are near your equiptment. If your base is attacked, aliens spawn at the access lift and the hangar and I suspect in alien containment although I can't confirm that one.

I don't consider it much of a problem, UFO was always just X-Com minus the license and it's not like the publishers can copyright the term 'UFO', which is why we see fan-projects like UFO: Alien Invasion being made.

One project I'm really keeping an eye on as well is UFO: The Two Sides which is essentially the first X-Com game but with high resolution artwork and a more modern interface. Looks very promising! Link.

I love these sort of tactical turn-based strategy sims, which is why I try to keep up-to-date on the latest X-Com inspired mods. It's also why I'm very, very sad about the direction the new *official* X-Com game is taking. Sure, it looks fun and the premise is neat, but what I truly wanted and hoped for was a modern-day take on the classic formula. Maybe an engine like the one Silent Storm used, destructible terrain, modern visuals, same good ol' turn-based goodness!

An FPS set in the mid-50's where you fight invading aliens, while cool, just isn't what I'd hoped for next in the X-Com franchise.

Ah well!

Yeah I don't recommend trial and error.
You can read/download the manual here:

http://www.xcomufo.com/x1manual.pdf

I know it's a long manual, but that's just kind of how old games were lol. There wasn't really hard drive space for tutorials so they just printed everything into the book. I'm sure you know this but it's 6:05am and i'm still not asleep so I'm rambling.

Go with the first, but remember you can rename your squads. When you see a Chrysalid you nuke that fucker, I don't care if your soldiers are nearby, they are already dead. Oh and don't savescum, losing is fun.

When you are done with Xcom, Jagged Alliance 2 is available from GOG. You know you want it.

first one: THE BEST
second one: the same just a little harder and more annoying (more of an expansion pack)
third one: Ok but it takes a lot to get use to

X-Com: Terror From the Deep is my favorite by some margin. It's HARD, though, and the battles tend to last for a LONG time.
TFTD was too hard for me if I'm being perfectly honest. I used a savegame editor to pimp my guys out from day one just so I could beat it.

For that reason alone I prefer the original UFO: Enemy Unknown.

The first one was the best for me. #2 was just the same game set in the ocean and much harder. Still, I enjoyed them both although I'm pretty sure I never came close to beating the second one.

The first one was best.

The new FPS spin-off is just a total waste of the IP. Nobody played UFO:EU for just the setting or plot; everyone played it for pure strategy and tactical combat goodness.

None of the old fans will buy the new XCOM for the old name. The shooter crowd will simply not care, or even recognize the name XCOM.

They didn't even need to buy the IP to make a shooter about aliens, because there's nothing in the basic premise to copyright anyway.
It's just a stupid decision, even if the new game does turn out to be ok for a shooter.

Looks great. If you haven't played the Jagged Alliance series, I recommend JA2 as a tactical-turn based strategy game wholeheartedly. The "reboot" might be a nice game, but it might as well just be called "the blob."

Anyway, the UFO games are wonderful, I just hope they aren't restricted by copyright or some bullshit from creating what they envision.
