The N64 was a good collection of new experiences. Conkers Bad Fur Day was my first ever day one purchase and never regretted it. Shadowman was a chance taken that paid off well, but I really wish they could modernise that idea, it really was a dark, difficult game that was so easy to get lost in. With a dense atmosphere. I had no idea what whether I was going in the right direction, but kept ploughing through. Haven't found a game like it since.

Last time I took a weird chance was Rollers of the Realm, a pinball RPG hybrid with a charming story mode. Those sorts of prices are easier to gamble on, and it turned out quite nicely. Psychnauts and Beyond Good and Evil were two other blind purchases that stand out in memory. Not much recently however. Maybe pixeljunk shooter collection, I enjoy that more than it appeared to be capable of providing. Cheap offers make bear more spendthrifty!

Nope. I only buy the games I'm super hyped about, from developers that it trust, that I've been waiting on forever. I find that this prevents me from getting burnt out on gaming as a hobby, or from wasting money. I pre-ordered FF15 and Persona 5 months ago.

I did almost impulse buy SMT Apocalypse today, though. I wisely decided to wait for another paycheck or two. I guess that makes me an adult.
Being super hyped is my biggest enemy. No game can live up to super hype.

A recent example would be The Fall, a sort of Metroid combined with a P&C adventure game where you play an AI controlling a combat suit with a half-dead human inside. Intriguing and even somewhat funny, but the animation was adequate at best and the controls were terrible.
Huh. I actually rather liked that game. Art style and the atmosphere made up for the controls.
Oh, I liked it too.

Would have loved to complete it, see where the story was going, get more of those AI interactions.

But every time I went to start it up I remembered the fiddly mouse aiming and the awkward finger-dance I had to do every time I wanted to use an item.

Do you find yourself taking chances on games often?
Afraid not. Games are expensive, and time intensive, and that's far more true now when I have to factor in other commitments and interests. So I'm afraid I play it safe.

Do you prefer to stick with what you already know?
Pretty much, by virtue of the above.

Do you feel like you lost some magic for gaming as you grew older?
Eh...I guess, but I attribute that to being an older, more mature person. I mean, there's all stuff we grow up with, viewing it with starry eyes. As you get older, you become harder to impress. So, maybe some of the 'magic' has gone, but I attribute that more to just growing up.

What if anything has changed how you decide what games you get?
Well, I have more purchasing power as an adult, so that does factor in. I guess I factor in far more consideration on story than when I once did. Also playing more games that can be played in short sessions (e.g. Heroes of the Storm, Paladins, etc.), while rarely devoting myself to more 'meaty' works.

Persona 5 can. Mass Effect 3 sure as hell didn't. It came pretty close though.

Even in your case, very few games will live up to super hype. Allowing yourself to get super hyped is really just setting yourself up for disappointment. Not to mention you can't be pleasantly surprised if you go into every game you buy with this super sense of expectation.

I bought Shadow of Mordor and Wolfenstein TNO on a whim, as there was a huge sale going on and I had extra money left from buying something else. Man, I do not regret that at all.

I do regret buying Shadow Warrior. I watched TB's video on it and he seemed pretty impressed and it was on sale, but I hated that game for some reason.

The latest game I bought on a whim was Tomb Raider. The 5 bucks I had left in my account was bugging me, so I thought I would try it out. Honestly, I am not every impressed so far. All the lame gore has made it hard for me to play in the house, as my ass would be fried if my baby sister saw Lara skewered on a tree branch. I haven't gotten very far in the game though, so we'll see.

Basically, how do all of you feel about this? Do you find yourself taking chances on games often? Do you prefer to stick with what you already know? Do you feel like you lost some magic for gaming as you grew older? Maybe it was the reverse? Am I just being a bummer? What if anything has changed how you decide what games you get? Are you mad that the poll I didn't add doesn't have a vegetarian option?
Considering so many new IPs are falling flat on their faces, yeah, I'd say I am more careful with my purchases and that I stick to what I know. Have games lost their magic? Not really. I was not into gaming much as a kid, I only started seriously gaming maybe 5 years ago. I can still be really impressed and amazed by games, the latest being Uncharted 4. And the only thing I'm mad at is that you didnt include a poll at all.

But as for me, I bought Rebel Galaxy on a whim a few weeks ago. For those who don't know, it's basically a cross between Freelancer and Firefly, and it did a good job of scratching my space sim itch until I finally got around to buying the Blood and Wine expansion for Witcher 3.
You might want to slightly rephrase that, because it looks like you're saying Witcher 3 "Blood and Wine" is a space sim, Though I'm still working through "Hearts of Stone" so for all I know maybe it is. All that French/Italian wine country with vampires is just a setup to some awesome space adventures......but everyone is too cool to spoil it.

Played rebel galaxy a few months ago. It was okay but not what I wanted. I might have to try it again and see if I appreciate it more.
