I would not Trust any promise Obama gives us. Remember he promised to veto the NDAA and instead he signed it saying "I'm signing this even though I believe this bill to be bad" Basically; He's broken his own word so many times by now, I refuse to believe a word he says. He can shout to the heavens that he will veto this bill I will not believe it until he ACTUALLY vetos it.
He would have been ruined had he not.

This has been done before. Anytime someone wants to do something terrible they tie it in with the pay of the military. In a country that fetishizes the Military he would have been written off by (most) news as anti-military, job killing, etc.

Do I think he should have not signed it? Yes. He should have not signed it and gone in front of everyone and said "Wake the hell up! Look what they tagged onto your paychecks just to get it through?! These people don't give a shit about you!"

But during that time there would have been a lot of people wondering why the Military was cutting their shit (not that it needs to, it would do so to make a point, same was done during Clinton's Presidency, why cut a Jet Fighter when you can cut soldier pay and stick it to the guy not sending you limitless funds).

So they let NDAA pass, but SOPA *might* be stopped in it's tracks?

Good logic, 'Bama Boy. Let the America turn into a police state but don't deny people's right to an uncensored internet!
They are different situations. But blanket statements do help move along the discussion.

And no-one noticed the part of that highlighter section in the OT, which to me was lit like a Neon Billboard ala Las Vegas,

Talk is cheap.

Forgive me if I don't believe anything a politician says until they can actually back it up with action.

This is a good step but I would rather the bill be scrapped completely. I have no problem with controlling piracy but giving them (the govt) this much power is just a terrible idea. One that I definitely don't trust Washington to use properly. This step is good for all internet users but they are going to come back with a slightly less aggressive bill, people still need to keep their eyes open to this.

What I find most annoying about the SOPA bill is that no-one outside the US can do anything aobut it! The most we could do is get a load of petitions signed and drop them of the local US embassy & hope they help!
The main problem with this bill is that it has been written by men & women who are too old to understand modern technology properly! They don't realise how many lively hoods this would ruin & how important an open internet is!
It may be a big issue in the states but barely gets a mention anywhere else! If other governments heard more about it then im sure they would try and get them to see sense, (afterall no one would like the sound of an american policed internet). Otherwise the only thing sites like The escapist could do is hope that the fair use law is still solid or relocate to a foreign domain!

Indeed, you're right. But still, there's a glimpse of hope, that he might actually vote against it, and for now that's enough. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I'll be kind of disappointed if it doesn't pass. I can't be the only one looking forward to the new experiences of living in a cyberpunk dystopia.
I for one welcome our new corporation overlords! *Also, double post you just did*

OT: Well that's good news. I'm not really a pro at american politics so can someone tell me if this means that the bill probably won't happen since the president is against it? Or is this a matter for the courts to decide?
My understanding of the American system is that right now the president's words are just wind. However, if the bill passes through the House and Senate, then the president can refuse to sign it into law. He then returns the bill to the legislature within 10 days, along with his objections in writing. They then have to consider his objections, and are expected to alter the bill to his satisfaction, lest he simply return it again without signing. This keeps going until A) The president signs the bill into law; or B) Both the Senate and the House decide with a 2/3rds majority to ignore the president and make it law anyways.

And off-topic, I'll only accept a cyberpunk dystopia that allows me to jack into the internet a la William Gibson

Your machinarium avatar supports this idea.

OT: I don't want SOPA at all, so at least it lessened will start lowering it in total.
