Living within the South for a few years now, I know many of the Southerners take offense to the term. It is typically said by blacks about the whites and meant in negative terms. If a white were to say '******' to a black, it is taken as heavily racist, but should a black say that to a black, it isn't the same.

I see it as a racial jest, not a good one by any means and I have friends who take offense to the term and I understand why. I don't like being called a Nazi. I had nothing to do with what happened in Germany at that time. My friends had nothing to do with what happened in the South at that time. Many of them weren't even alive when segregation existed, let alone slavery.

The average woman sucks at driving compared to the average man because they process spatial relationships worse. Of course, the average guy is much more likely to kill themselves in a car because they take much greater risks at high speed, but they're still better at driving. And get in less accidents.
That may be scientifically true, but that still doesn't make ads like this [http://modcloth.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/car-ad.jpg?w=450&h=400] okay.

I've been called it, and not in a joking or ironic way either. Was I offended? Not really. Is it a racial slur? Most definitely.

I've been called a "Cracka" before, and it's not really offended me. I understand where it comes from, but there are just so many worse things to be called (most of which have nothing to do with being white). So, if you're looking for a white-focused racial slur with some bite...I can't really help you.

Fun fact: George Zimmerman is not white. He's hispanic.

No, I'd find it funny.

Nobody uses the term here in Australia, I don't even know what it actually means. Sounds like something you'd eat with cheese or avocado, maybe dip in some salsa.

...

Now I'm hungry. Wish I had some crackers.

There is very little that one could say to me that would cause me to feel offended. Having said that, if someone called me a "cracka" I would laugh and laugh because they couldn't find something more offensive to throw at me.

No.
First of all, I'm Irish, not American so it wouldn't really be relevant.
Secondly, it's an "insult" that comes from white people being in a position of immense power, it doesn't have the same connotations as the word ****** does. ****** has it's roots in racial inferiority and subjugation.

Anyone who thinks that those two words are on a par with each other is pretty ignorant.

I'm sorry, but there is not a world where Cracka or Cracker could offend any white person.
Unless you know that 'cracker' was a derogatory term for a slave-master (people who cracked whips). So calling someone a cracker is essentially calling them a racist asshole/ slave-master

It's like calling someone Spaghetti.
More like calling someone a Spaghetti slurper, or a cotton picker or a taco folder.

Of course not. Words are cheap.

As the intention of the person using it would've been to cause offense, I'd on principle react with an equal amount of hostility anyway though.

i have never been called a cracker. if i would, i wouldnt take offence.
i had to look up the word when i heard it first time used in such context, apperently its the equivalent of word "nigga" for whites.

what i do take offence however is usage of

I'm not even familiar with the word, (And whether I'm 'white' is questionable, depending on who you ask, but I look caucasian enough to be classified as such in the States, I guess) but I wouldn't like it if I was just referred to by skin-colour.

But it depends on the context.
If the word was used in a group where everyone else was black, for example, it would carry the meaning of 'you're not one of the group', which it wouldn't if it was used in a context that was more diverse. (And that's also why slurs against minorities are more problematic than those describing majorities; they are used to define someone solely by their skin-colour/ethnicity/sexual orientation)

Also if a politician used it in a speech or something, I'd probably be more annoyed than if it was a random person on the street.

And even if not I really wouldn't care... I actually don't mind slang terms for races. We call Americans "Yanks" and the English "Poms" and they don't take much offense.
Since when are Americans and English races?

No, I can't say I would. Especially seeing how my ancestors have never been systematically objectified, abused, and exploited for five centuries.
You're kind of missing the point then.
I'm not saying you should be offended by the word, but if refers to the cracking of a whip that a slave master would do.
So yeah the reason it's an insult is because your ancestors were (supposedly) performing the persecution. And use of the word cracker implies that you also do so, or condone it in some way.

not what i was talking about. The word itself is a expression construct and not a word. its like saying " the dog au at him because he didnt know him". no, the dog barked, and au is the sound he made. and you dont flabbergast. the word itself is a false construct.

Where I grew up racial slurs were often a sign of camaraderie. I honestly didn't learn that ******, Spic, *****, Cracker, etc were bad things to say until I was.... Well pretty damn old (the exact age will come to me eventually).

With above in mind I am not offended although I was taught that cracker is also a racial slur.
If it isn't and my multiethnic teachers were just pushing lies into my head so be it but I personally don't care if someone calls me a cracker. Most of my friends and their family referred to me using the N word anyway and only called me a cracker when I was being a sarcastic prick. Ah good times.

The joys of ignorance eh?

I also mentioned the French and Russians. They're all "white" but you'd be a fool if you couldn't tell the difference between them.

Toss "Mick" in there and you've even got the Irish.

But sure, it'd be unlikely for any of them to call another white person "Cracka".

I wouldn't be offended. More confused as to why they went through the mental work of deciding to use the word at all.

If it is used as an insult I'm more bewildered then offended, as it seems a bit of a silly thing to put someone down over. If it's used jokingly though I'm generally fine with it. The whole idea of racial slurs in general doesn't make much sense to me TBH.

Basically only resort to racial slurs if they start it first. Like to dish it out, you better be willing to take it. I can tell you one thing that sucks about being white. Really easy for a white person to do something that can be considered racist. Ever not shake a black persons hand when they greet you. If you don't shake their hand and you are white, well now you are racist. I hate human contact, I can't stand touching people. It doesn't matter honky, you are racist.
