Who are you, and why are you kicking my ass?

We all know, when we play a storyline in a video game, that we will eventually have to fight the main antagonist at the end. This sucker's always going to be a challenge, and we'll be preparing the entire game through to get the courage and firepower to destroy him.

Then there are the other types of bosses. You know the ones- you're going along, when all of a sudden they appear from nowhere, are never mentioned in the story or even alluded to, and for some reason their anonymity has given them the incredible ability to RIP. SHIT. UP.

Tl;dr - Name a or fight which was extremely hard, but which you were either given no warning for or whom had no relevance whatsoever to the story at hand.

Off the top of my head, I know about the Zombie Dragon in one of those castles in FF5. Not only extraordinarily powerful and capable of absorbing/shrugging off most of your attacks, but also capable of zombifying your teammates so that they attack you at 0 HP. Can't be revived, except by Holy Water (which I personally had in scant quantities at that time) and even that will only put them in a KO status so you can Phoenix Down them alive again JUST IN TIME FOR THE BASTARD TO START AGAIN.

Many RPGs have bosses that just pop out of nowhere. I can't think of too many that don't come from those games.

Looking at Dynasty Warriors 4 on my PS2 game shelf has made me think of a big 'Fuck You' in the game: Lu Bu. I can't remember if it was told in the mission briefing or not.

When I hear this I'm constantly reminded of the Megaman Battle Network series. In 3 and 4 they simply "mention" stuff about the surprise boss at the end, but was not even a central part of the game and it felt like they had to tack on an arbitrary boss fight at the end with some weird thing that was considered to be unstoppable.

Dark Link, from Ocarina of Time was fairly unexpected, if I remember correctly. I mean - in the Water Temple? What about the Shadow Temple? Difficult to beat when I was first playing it too.
But Dark Link was awesome. I enjoyed fighting him more than any of the other dungeon and temple bosses, his fight actually forced you to find the rhythm in his attack pattern and counter effectively, while in all the other boss fights its just "wait till the right moment then strike to knock them down and wail on their weak spot".

Now I also remember Ganon from that same game. I mean the whole game he was menacing as Ganondorf, then all of a sudden he transforms into the classic Ganon. Although it was one of the most epic boss fights I've ever played it was still a confusing surprise.

The "Dark Force" from every one of the Phantasy Star games.

What the fuck is this thing? Why is it behind EVERY. SINGLE. ************ who wants you dead?

most importantly:

Why is that the party somehow knows what it is and the fact that they need to fight it, despite having no hints in the game as to it's role in all this?

"We just stopped Evil Lord Frowny-Pants. OH SHI-- Dark Force! I knew it was you all along! Let's fight him for great justice, because he ate my kitten!"

Final Fantasy X had a decent amount of these. You're just walking along and BAM HUGE MONSTER WTF. And those boss battles could be nasty hard or downright impossible if you didn't know the special tricks.

Shinryuu comes to mind from FF5, although they gave you warning about him, Omega popped up before you read the text warning you that he was pure evil power incarnate.

Thanks.

Pretty much every boss battle that happened in Okami.

"Well, beat the dragon I was summoned to kill. Guess the game's over..."

And then after another 30+ hours of gameplay that you never saw coming?

"What the fuck is that thing?! A seal?! A baby seal?! What the fucking-OH MY GOD, I'M ON FIRE!"

Lu Bu is basically THAT character from all stories/games, the one who has mastered everything, and is looking for a worthy challenge to test his might. And in the DW games, he is by every definition: OP..

For more info: Lu Bu

The water dragon and the giant bone monster in Ninja Gaiden 2.

Final Fantasy 10: To start with a huge monster attacks you almost as soon as you land in Spira, the octopus thing that attacks you and Rikku on the underwater ruins, the Spherimorph (big, floating blob) in the Macalania forest, Defender X (big rock golem) after exiting the calm lands and the wendigo that the Guados pull out of their arse to ambush you when you're running from the temple.

Name an Ace Combat game, any Ace Combat game.

At some point some guy you've never heard of will show up and proceed to rape you with his overpowered superjet.

Has no one thought that if your exploring a dungeon or an ancient castle, there's going to be something large and pissed wanting you out of it's living space
If it's a war or just you and your buddies exploring the wild you will come across that powered armor tank or that dragon you woke up and they will kick your ass

unless your high enough lvl

I remember Goht from Majora's Mask was a total dick. Not only does he come out of nowhere, but he's trapped frozen in a block of ice, and i'm nice enough to unfreeze him and how does he repay me? Tries to murder me. Yeah, nice, you fucking dude-goat-buffalo-thing. Real polite.

I'd have to say Celia and Lede of FFT. They show up out of nowhere, as minor henchmen, and I think "Oh, just gotta protect that guy for 3 rounds and watch out for the boss". Then proceed to watch those 2 murder people for the many times I attempted to actually get past that mission...

About 2/3 the bosses in God Hand come out of absolutely nowhere. A gorilla reading newspaper and a little cave-dwelling psychic man come to mind as some of the completely random fights.
