Most likely Axton, although I checked the skill tree and I am not a fan of what they did to the soldier's skills.
May I ask whats wrong with Axton Skill tree?
As a main of the Soldier class in Borderlands 1, I have leveled up Roland all the way to 69, so of course I did experiment with his tree. And now I that I just saw Axton´s tree, I belive it seems to be at least twice the better than it was before!
Its just curiosity, perpars theres something I have missed as well.
I am just not a fan of the way they separated the tree into three quite separate options. I loved Roland because he was self-sufficient; his turret, besides providing some support fire, worked as a movable cover and its health and ammo regen capabilities allowed me to go solo most of the times.
Now it seems like the soldier can either provide fire support, defensive support or regenerative support, but only one of those things (unless I spread among lower level skills). I understand that its intentional to force me to team up with other characters online, but I think I will miss the self-sufficient side of the class.
Um. Yeah, after reading your post and thinking about it for a moment, I think I can kind of see what you are saying.
While Roland obviously had some skills oriented towards buffing/helping the whole group, he also had quite a few usefull abilities for himself, such as those that gave him 5% health regeneration whenever he scored a kill, and also the that created grenades for every kill (it was limited in some kind of way, I think it was something like 1 grenade per minute of active skill... something like that. My point still gets across anyway) Yeah I think those are just some (I cant really forget the abilities that I used to finally defeat Crawmerax solo with the soldier. Oh, man that was a godlike moment...) ANYWAYS...
Yeah, viewing it from that point he seems to be lacking that...
But really, think about the incredible buffs the Scorpio turret has gotten. Now it can be (potentially according to how you distribute your skill points of course) attached at ceilings and walls, get rockets (was already in BL1 but this time it seems even better), teleported like one of those teleport grenades from BL1, and even get TWO turrets at once, Oh yeah, and it can also be retrieved whenever you want, meaning, if theres no enemies in the area, you can take your turret with you again and the cooldown will be less!
And thats just some. I think its a fair trade. AFter all, they SAID the Scorpio turret was going to be more of a protagonist in the battlefield this time around. And you can still go around shooting enemies while the turret/s do that as well somewhere else

.
As a final note, dont forget external buffs for each class (Class mods. They might fix the little problem). Either way, we dont haev any way to know until we finally play the freaking game
