I'm not whining or anything just want to know WHY game makers do this.
I mean is it for:
·Favoritism
·Publicity
·People like me to go on forums and argue
·Money
I own a 360 and i enjoy it but there will always be some game on ps3 ill want bt can't have.
I'm just looking for a simple answer.

Money.
The makers of the console pay for the developer/publisher to make the game exclusive.

Good question, I don't know why they do that.

I personally think that is what starts fanboy wars because 360 owners say, "we have the better console because we have great titles like Halo and Gears of War." Where then the PS3 owners reply saying, "no, we have the better console because we have titles like Resistance and Killzone 2." Or even if the game is mutiplatform, one version of the game will have a few extras that the other game doesn't and vice versa so that they even eachother out.

What else could it be for? Companies only ever want to make money nowadays.

Usually this. But there are expections too, for e.g. PC exclusives rarely get paid to stay exclusive, usually then it's a matter of audience, platform specific strenghts, or not having enough resources for multiplatform development.

It's just for the money. Developers can be bought out to only develop games for a single system. Something I find rather sad. But, at least it makes good competition. Most things that aren't completely mainstream are multi-platform anyway and in my opinion, they're the better games.

hard ware limitations(i.e. halo 3 on wii would look quite bad and require not a port but a complete redesign which takes time and cost money) and Microsoft spends several million on a game just to put it on a competitors console? it doesn't make sense

Making exclusives means that they don't have to worry about using the codes for each game system. This makes production much easier. Also it lets the developer get more out of their game by focusing on one system. It's much easier to make a game for one game system than multiple systems. Also, if you look at multiplatformed games, you'll notice that they could be alot more. The games would have aot more content if they were exclusives. And besides exclusives means more competition and that means more publicity. But more importantly, it makes future games better. I love exclusives because they mean more than if they were multiplatformed. If all the games were the same on each game system, then the only system that would profit would be the cheaper one. That in the long run, would mean that the system would become cheap and cheaper (in quality), who wants that? Exclusives gives you reasons to buy and play each system... I <3 my 360 and my PS3, with out exclusives, I would have wasted $600+.

Your Xbox or PS3 costs more to make than they sell them for.

In order to make money, they need you to buy games, and the console maker takes a cut from every game sold for their system.

If they get enough good exclusive content, then people will choose their console over their competitor, and therefore sell more games, and make more profit.

Nowadays? I thought that's been the whole point of companies since they came into existence.

its compromises. if a certain game will be made only for a certain consol and it is a game that people would want. they will buy that consol. its advertising and marketing techniques.

I think the new consoles have been out too long for that to work anymore.
I hope the companies will realice that soon.

It's just money. Publishers sign deals with console makers for exclusives in exchange for money, that's how it works.

1. Money
2. Do you really want all games on all consoles? Would that really be a good thing? Think about it. If that were the case, people would just buy the cheapest console, and the cheapest games. This would result in, at the moment, two companies going bust, and would result in the total elimination of any competition in the video game market. This would in turn result in most of the games being mediocre if not downright bad, because they know that people will buy them anyway, and have nothing to compare them to or compete against.

I realise I've complained that videogame quality is decreasing even with the current situation, but seriously, does the above scenario sound like a good idea to you?

im just giving a general reason why some do, im not saying currently. Example is that people who are in love with mario games will buy the newest nintendo system for a future mario game, right?

I have a theory on this.

Say you develop a game, now you want it on the PS3, the xBox, and the PC. (Not the Wii because they don't have the processing power to handle said game).

In order to port the game to the 360 and PS3, you'd need to purchase SDKs for all of them, and invest time and money in modifying the game's code and interfacing so that it was compatible with those consoles. Most companies don't want to do this.

Nintendo hasn't been very popular with 3rd parties on their home consoles for the past 3 generations. N64 they used cartridges instead of disks, GC they used minidisks, and the Wii doesn't need explaining.
