I'm conducting a little experiment and would be greatly interested if the members of the Escapist could assist me with it.

Imagine yourself as part of a mystery novel where some kind of murderer is on the loose. They can travel unseen and kill without fear of being caught. The questions below can be answered separately or together as the case may be, but any unconventional answer is much appreciated.

Who would this murderer be? You, a child, some serial killer? Be creative please.

If you were in this position who might you kill? You could dispose of anyone and not one soul would ever know. Would it be your enemies or would you let them live in fear. Strangers or would you feel too guilty. Friends, because after all you didn't need them at all.

Your responses will help me greatly and hopefully get me thinking again.

I read too much Lovecraft so:

A being made of points of light. Not fully seen as it evaded the spectrum of the eye. An invisble alien entity. It crawled into the minds of the people around it and possesed them to kill themselves.

It lived off their death throws. It ate their souls!

How's that for a twist ending?

If the person in question murders people, even if said person were to be myself or anyone else, would they not instantly become a serial killer? This is in response to your first question, which is located in your third paragraph. I do enjoy your careful separation of thoughts, by the way.

I'm guessing the person would be MaxTheReaper. And he would kill almost everyone. Of course, some would be left to worship him and for whatever small amount of company he requires.

I don't believe I could be the murderer, if only because I am far too lazy to come up with plans and follow through with them. Although, I may murder one person if it meant I would forever have the ability to "travel unseen".

Edit: My apologies on not being very original. Rather tired. Perhaps I'll try again tomorrow...

They are not dead, you are dead. And the harrowing tale of seeing those around you perish is nothing more then an illusion created by the last firing synapses in your brain straining for life!

Hmm.. what Lovecraft story is that? I read a compendium of Lovecraft but I don't recall that one (but it sounds fucking awesome).

I just wrote it. I enjoy his style of aliens and horror and tend to copy it a bit.

A mix of Animorphs and Lovecraft (that was low I admit)

A creature that feeds on fear, it can not speak and can only be noticed through a rise in humidity but shares a symbiotic relationship with small birds who chant its name. The people hear the chanting and become wary of what it is, until it drinks them dry, leaving an emotionless husk. The birds swoop down and eat the defenceless person while onlookers hear the continued chants of the creature's name.

If the OP is trying to mine the site for ideas, remember that eventually you will have to come up with killers of your own and you are only delaying the writers block, not curing it.

The killer is your split personality alter-ego, Francisco Duckmints. Years of sexual and social repression resulted in Francisco's birth in the dark, unexplored corners of your mind. Now, the stress of work, your impending eviction from your apartment and rumors of a rude, loudmouthed hooligan spotted in your neighborhood has caused Francisco to burst free every night, just after you fall asleep.

Everything you are, Francisco Duckmints is not. Every crazy thing you've ever wanted to do but never went through with, he does without a second thought. Every dark impulse, every instance of shameful lust, every negative thought you've ever had... They're what make up his very existence.

And that's why he'll never be caught. *dramatic music cue*

Ok, you are the murderer and the people you murdered werent actual people but figments of a split personality disorder.

Turns out at the end that all this is going through the mind of a murder in the electric chair getting the juice.

The murderer would be someone who dabbled a bit too much in solipsistic thought and became totally engrossed by it and completely believed it, and believing himself/herself to be the only true thing that exists they felt they could easily take any actions they so desired, like murder.

Were it me, I'd probably go about killing hate-spewing bigots. Namely, Westboros, maybe just beat the shit out of Rush Limbaugh, etc etc.

Listen to him. I would suggest him summoning a spirit creature from the Necronomicon to do his bidding, or use psychic powers given to him by an alien force. The more he uses his power, the more his body twists and contorts to suite the evil beings appetite for possession.

Hmm, I like the idea of someone controling this creature. But every killing should be a suiside so he thinks no one can trace it back to him, but...

Oh god I have to write this!

I wouldn't mind being able to silently take out some people myself. I'd kill those who have given up on being humane and are only tarnishing hunmanity. Those that abuse life and tear at the good in others, would live in fear or me... their bringer of justice and vegence.
I would explain to them why they were about to die before i take their distasteful lives away.
I would never let myself be known as the killer, and would never kill without justification.
I suppose i would be like Light in Death Note, but without the L and Near to bring me down.

Anti-hero's are the best kind... they are more real. Plus a Hero tends to either die or turn evil (and yes i realize this sounds like a Dark Knight quote, but its not an uncommon concept even b4 that movie). An Anti-Hero has a much better survival rate since him/herself tends to be a main focus in their eyes. Of course they can easily swing over to a Hero staus at a split second decision and end up dead.
anyway...

It would be great to see how the world would turn out if the evil people in the world started dropping like flies at my hands... i'd probably take out many politcal leaders (harborers of war and all), greedy corperations, retarded/useless/bad-role-model "celebrities" (Paris probably be first), and of course bringing down religious control/influence would be a main target as well.

Eventually i would force to world to behave, treat each other well, and share... "play nice or i take your life"!
