Not sure if you're being serious or not. Nic Cage is basically a poor man's Tom Cruise, all he does is run around and have freakouts.

I am torn between Benedict Cumberbatch and Sir Patrick Stewart. However, considering I've watched both seasons of Sherlock again recently, I'll choose Cumberbatch for the time being.

There's a lot of very good actors out there (Dustin Hoffman, Ian McKellan, Sam Rockwell, Gary Oldman, etc) and some very entertaining "movie stars" who substitute charisma for talent (Bruce Willis, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, etc), but I think Daniel Day-Lewis is pretty much a cut above the herd when it comes to standout acting. The guy doesn't play parts, he just becomes completely different, completely convincing people.

I'm going to go with Ed Norton. I've had discussions about this before. Anyone notice how few female actors top anyone's choices?

I am surprised that Daniel Day-Lewis has not been mention yet...

Seriously though, my vote goes to Robert de Niro and Armand Assante. I love me some well chewed Irish-Italian ham

If you'd add the word "looking" or "dressed" between best and actor to the thread topic...

I have always felt Brad Pitt is often overlooked. Sure he has been in some terrible films but when given room to shine he is amazing. Fight Club, Sev7en, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Burn After Reading, Inglourious Basterds, 12 Monkeys. All with Brad Pitt being a great actor.
how could you miss out kalifornia?! he's incredible in that.

personally for best i'd say daniel day lewis, with mentions to tom hardy (him in bronson... just incredible), tom hanks, michael fassbender and will smith.

i wouldn't say he's one of the best actors, but one of my favourites is still steve buscemi

I have mixed feelings about the OP's choice of Tom Cruise. On the one hand he's made a lot of films that I really like - Eyes Wide Shut, Interview with the Vampire, Collateral, Valkyrie... and on the other hand he makes a lot of movies where he essentially does the same shallow thing he's been doing ever since Top Gun and Risky Business.

My personal pick would be Gene Hackman. From serious drama like Mississipi Burning, French Connection and Unforgiven to stylised action like The Quick and the Dead to comedy like The Birdcage. - I've never seen him give a bad performance.

And he's the definitive Lex Luthor.
...plus he's the best bugger on the West Coast...

Gene is a good one, I myself like Ben Kingsley, because he can go from Ghandi to Don Logan...that is a lot of range. Plus he can replace Anthony Hopkins...

EDIT:

Jack Lemmon could be considered one of the greats just for his performance in Glengarry Glen Ross.

You have to include the entire cast of that film in a list of the greats, including Alec "Coffee is for closers only" Baldwin.

Gary Oldman. He is a chameleon. From playing both old and young Dracula, to Jean-Baptise Emanuel Zorg, Sirius Black, Commissioner Gordon, and Lee Harvey Oswald, he never looks the same in any role he's ever played.
Yes, Gary Oldman is by far the best actor ever. He stole Léon: The Professional despite having about ten minutes of screen time and he nailed the part of George Smiley in Tinker Taylor Solider Spy. Hell he even kicked ass in CoD: World at War.

It's an unfortunate but realistic fact of modern Hollywood. With the majority of leading roles being for men, the best actors tend to men. They get the most exposure, and are driven to be the best actors possible. Notice that there have also hardly been any non-white actors mentioned in this thread.

If I had to pick the best female actor... dunno, it's tough because you don't see women with the recurring star power of men in Hollywood these days. Sally Field was incredible as Mary Todd Lincoln in Lincoln, but having hardly seen her in other movies I couldn't call her the best female actor. I always like when Scarlett Johansson is in a film, but I honestly can't objectively judge her acting skill while disregarding the eye-candy factor.

The sexy beast named Robert Carlyle. He was the sole reason Stargate Universe was even worth the effort (all the other actors/characters and general storylines were completely shit)

I don't think I could pick a best actor. There are too many I enjoy watching for different reasons. My current favourites are probably:

Peter Dinklage (not just for Game of Thrones. Because I've yet to see a performance of his in anything that didn't totally captivate my attention)

David Thewlis. Same reason as PD; and apart from Dragonheart, I can't think of anything he's done I wasn't keen on. He was still alright in Dragonheart.

Robert DeNiro. Kind of an obvious choice.

Michelle Gomez always brings awesome to her comedy roles too.

I'm a little surprised at your choice for Tom Cruise aswell, OP. I've always felt he was a bit too vain to really be a good actor. Even playing bad guys, he always plays them as very cool and determined out of some sense of honour; to make them admirable on some level. I can't think of a role he's played where his character is flawed in a way that makes them truly vulnerable; then again I haven't seen all of his work.

I want to give an honourable mention to Toby Jones too.

Also, Russel Crowe, for his performance in: 'Man With Sand in His Vagina':

I've never heard a movie critic/historian/buff ever say that Tom cruise is the "best" actor. He may be someone's favorite actor, for whatever reason, but certainly talent-wise, Tom cruise isn't even close to being the best.

If I had a top 10 list of best actors, Sean Penn would be near the top because he does such a wide variety of roles. It's hard to choose between him and Daniel Day Lewis. While he may not be the best, I think John Malkovich is severely underrated.

For female actor, the correct answer is Meryl Streep. Is there really any other actor that can do what she has, as good as she has?

Gary Oldman was the first name to pop into my head. Ben Kingsley is another.

Many others already listed here, too, of course. It's hard to choose, really. And I'm kinda too lazy to make a list.

I think best actor is usually defined by the body of work they've done, really. Sometimes they have nothing to work with - bad script, bad writing, etc, and they aren't great in it... but if you get a good movie, some actors are good and others transcend that. A lot of it comes with choosing the right roles, too.

Brad Pitt, hes probably not the best actor ever, but i enjoyed most of his movies. And to add some random names that makes me interested in a movie: Morgan Freeman, Russel Crowe, Daniel Day Lewis, Tom Hardy.. Fuck it, theres too many names and i'll probably forget most of them.

I'm a Sean Bean fan, through and through.

Also, John McGinley. (Dr Cox, the curly haired middle aged one with the stubble)

The feels.
