Having a discussion with a friend and we both agreed that rock band used to be alot better. I want to see if the Escapist agrees on this.

To Me the greatest would have to be Pink Floyd, they just have so much emotion and meaning behind alot of their songs and are unique in there style.

I hate this BS everything was better in the past shit. But then the past is for certain the future is unknown so I guess there is a degree of safety in that. Anyway my favorite band is, take a guess, Iron Maiden. I like how the music tends to meld well with the lyrics more so then a lot of bands. Also they tend have lyrics and riffs that I well like.

It's a tie between The Beatles and Queen. Both were masters of the art of music, unafraid to explore, expand and create entirely new genres, both are key inspirations for a host of following genres and bands and both were fronted by incredible vocalists and backed up by extraordinary musicians who ended up creating two of the most awe-inspiring back catalogues this world has ever seen.

No, I'm saying it's good that they broke up before they turned shite.

You can't trick me, Goofguy.

AC/DC. They have been awesome for a long time and managed to survive a change of lead singer and just get more awesome.

For what it's worth, I agree with you 100%. Led Zeppelin is my favourite band, my dying wish[footnote]I am not actually dying[/footnote] is to see them live once (as unlikely as that will ever be).

I'm gonna throw out an oddball and say Coheed & Cambria. I love Pink Floyd & Zeppelin & Black Sabbath & Maiden & all thosde other fucking awesome bands. In fact I always say Pink FLoyd is my favorite band ever, but when I listen to Coheed & Cambria I hear all those other bands rolled up into one & it works. I couldn't stand them the first time I heard one of their songs, but after I listened to a couple of albums because a friend was listening to them I heard all the stuff I loved from those other bands & they did it so well.

Upon some consideration, to me The Who would be my number one. Just above REM.

As for why? Sheer sound. I think it was Bono who said that the reason these guys could make so much noise was that it was a full band where everyone played lead.

But with a setlist like Pinball Wizard, Baba O'Riley, Wont Get Fooled Again, and Behind Blue Eyes, they have a lot going for them.

Pink Floyd ofcourse and... do Radiohead count? I'm not entirely sure since they're also part Electronica, atleast in their past 10 years.

Get out.

All of you, right now. I'm not even joking.

Fuck Pink Floyd, now and forever.

I actually once left a Jeff Beck gig because he brought out Dave Gilmour as the special guest. understand that I had wanted to see Jeff Beck since I was 12, it had taken 9 years, and I still left because that motherfucking overrated piece of absolute wank walked on stage with his stupid smug grin and his absolutely undeserved hero worship.

Very few things in the world get me as legitimately genuinely angry as Pink Floyd.

Alright, I'm joking about the get out thing, but seriously, I hate Pink Floyd more than anything apart from Emma Watson.

Greatest rock band ever is a tough one though. The classic of course would be Zeppelin, who I've loved for a long time, and Deep Purple were my first guitarist love, but recently I've moved more into Bruce Springsteen territory.

Aerosmith have always been a favourite, as have the Eagles, but I certainly wouldn't say either of them were my fvaourite...

I more love the idea of that sort of music. Anything that can make you strut and swagger, anything that has 60s crunch guitars and a rhythm section (drums and bass) that are tight as can be while the guitarist and vocalist stumble over the time signature.

Something like Neil Young on Rust Never Sleeps, ZZ Top Legs, Thin Lizzy or Gary Moore.

Probably there is one song that epitomises my idea of the 'perfect' rock song.

Yeah they count. I meant rock as a broad grouping :D

Guess the saying is kinda true by going by all these answers.

AC/DC, they are pure Rock and if someone said "Rock", AC/DC is the first band I think of.

They are the one band I really want to see, who are still going.

Queen because like the beatles before them their influence forever changed music and inspired many bands and still do. Queen's albums to, each one was different from the last and some went into a completely new and unexplored (for the band) genre. That and live they put so much energy into the shows and songs, Queen were one of the few bands that sound better live than in studio (which still sounded good )

Going by your comment you have in my opinion good taste in music, can I ask why you hate Pink Floyd so much?
