I can't decide between The Who, Metallica, or the Foo Fighters. I'll just call it a three way tie.

It's a tie between The Beatles and Queen. Both were masters of the art of music, unafraid to explore, expand and create entirely new genres, both are key inspirations for a host of following genres and bands and both were fronted by incredible vocalists and backed up by extraordinary musicians who ended up creating two of the most awe-inspiring back catalogues this world has ever seen.
Going to have to second this man here, Beatles and Queen.

The Beatles are listed as an inspiration to so many bands, the amount of people in the world who can say I hate every Beatles song is very limited, plus they were only together for about 10 or so years. So they never got burned out or anything, the hit their peak and stayed there.

Queen I can't really say much about as I haven't looked past their music all that much. But damn what amazing music. Such powerful emotions in them.

'Tis good and catchy, but it's also bland. Doesn't make me think or evoke any emotions, or take me to any new places in my imagination, or anything like that... about the only thing you can really do with it is headbang (or, as you say, "swagger"). There is a time and a place, but it doesn't come close push any of my real "love" buttons.

See, if I want catchy, energetic music, I go to people like the Foo Fighters.

Awesome satisfying guitars & vocal delivery. It can never stimulate me in the same way as Pink Floyd or Radiohead, or even bands like Muse and Linkin Park which are somewhere in the middle (I'd be happy to explain if you want), but I still like it, and it's an especially good sort of music live.

Pink Floyd of course.
Going by your comment you have in my opinion good taste in music, can I ask why you hate Pink Floyd so much?
If I'm being a little less judgemental it's a simple case of different strokes for different folks. Pink Floyd have always sounded incredibly pretentious to me, and often it feels to me like they're doing things just for the sake of doing them instead of for the sake of the music. After I started to play the guitar as well I just grew to really hate the amount of plugging they got from everyone saying they were good and that I should learn their songs.

I just don't like them. Musically, their personalities, their presence in the music industry, their influence (I hold them almost personally resonsible for prog rock), their way of putting songs together, the content of their songs. Every single bit of them annoys me in some way.

Also, I dislike Dave Gilmour outside of the band, because I have yet to see a single live performance of his I think is even interesting. And sometimes people will show me his videos and I will actually start to feel annoyed at his playing because it just doesn't work for me. At all.

Heh, so do I. Funny that. Yes are one of my favourite bands. Still can't stand the way punk killed the genre off (my feelings towards the Sex Pistols roughly mirror your own towards Floyd).

Absolutely, it doesn't actually connect with me in any way when I listen to it.

It's more like my example song. A good rock song should have these things to it, but also be emotional. Like Springsteen has the stops just before verses, or Aerosmith have the riffs, or ZZ Top have the crunchy guitars. Roadstar is just the only song I've found that has all of them.

Personally I treat it more like a paint by numbers. Someone took all the best aspects of rock and threw them together into one song, they just forgot to add the whole 'connection with the audience.'

Although I did see them live supporting the Darkness (they blew the Darkness off the stage they were so good) and the song was a lot better live.

Very satisfied to see Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin in the first two posts, they are my favourite and second-favourite bands, and they have most scrobbles on my last.fm account.

For me, it will be Pink Floyd. It's my favourite and even though I seem to know almost every song they've ever released note for note, but I can still feel something new everytime I listen to them. But that's a biased answer.

For a non-bias answer, you'd have to take into account various factors - record popularity, skilfulness of the musicians, live performances, maybe several others I can't really think of now. But for those three, there are a large number of bands that classify. I tend to listen to older music, so right away I can say that the most known classic rock bands can be named as the best ever - Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Queen, hell even the Beatles. And yes, Pink Floyd.

I HATE picking favourites and making "Top-X of all time" lists. Gonna go with Pink Floyd as my final answer.

Reading this thread just reminded me of how many cool rock bands are from down under...

I will throw this in for all its worth.

As much as I love Led Zeppelin, and I do love them. And as much as I rate bands like Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, The Who etc.

I've thought about this question long and hard for years, I have to say it's Pearl Jam.

Pretty much the definitive band of the 90's, Pearl Jam have it all as a group. One of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time backed up by a group of musicians who are just as capable, professional and brilliant as the afformentioned bands. Yet they never seem to get too much recognition for it. Meaningful lyrics, memorable lifts and a handful of very recognisable anthems and riffs.

They have never split up, never begged for attention and are arguably just as good live now as they ever were.

Since the mighty Bonzo died and Zeppelin ended, Pearl Jam have been one of the most consistent, hard working bands ever since. They really tick all the boxes for me to name them *one of* the greatest rock bands ever.

I disagree with you there, but I can't really lay any base to support my opinion. I think it's a matter of taste and can't really be argued.

But if you think they're doing things "just for the sake of doing them", do you by chance hate bands like Gentle Giant or Van der Graaf Generator? They also do things to add complexity to their songs, which are pretty damn complex even by prog rock standards.

Think I'd pick The Who. Pretty much all the bands named so far have had a couple of classic songs that people would immediately name if you asked them to name songs by them The Who has Won't Get Fooled Again, Who Are You, My Generation, Baba O' Riley, Pinball Wizard and probably more.

They've also influenced and inspired their fair share of rock bands and people as well, including Led Zeppelin, The Clash, U2, Brian May (Queen), Rush, The Jam, The Ramones, Green Day.

They also originated the "rock opera" and coined the term "power pop" about their 60s singles and many power pop bands took inspiration from them including Cheap Trick, amongst others.

So yeah, The Who for me.

If I had to pick a current rock band for the greatest of this time, I would pick the Foo Fighters.

I hate the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, but damn were they ever influential. Without them, a lot of modern bands wouldn't be around.

A good rule of thumb for me goes as follows:

If it's prog rock, I don't like it.

Pink Floyd are like the precursers to prog rock, which is why I hate them. Probably the reason I truly hate Pink Floyd is because I've heard more of their stuff. Like I'd hate Van der Graaf Generator if I'd heard more than two of their songs or I'd hate Yes if I knew more about them than 'a wizard played the keyboards.'

I don't listen to prog at all. It's not real rock for me.
