i think that the best gutarists would have to be jimi hendrix, joe satriani, paul gilbert, steve vai and mikeal akerfeldt (the gutarist from opeth)

edit: it should say guitarists in the title but i made a typing error

Jimi, Slash, Van Halen. I would name some bassists but we all know bass players don't play for the attention so let's not give them any.

Are we talking all genres or just rock?

Hendrix certainly is at the top of the rock list.
I'd lean towards Wes Montgomery as the best jazz guitarist.
Andres Segovia is probably the best classical guitarist.
And the best blues guitarist for me is a toss-up between T-Bone Walker and Robert Johnson.

My two favorites are Kirk Hammet of Metallica and Brian Haner Jr. (aka Synyster Gates) of Avenged Sevenfold.

I've been listening to a lot of Metallica lately so I'll say Kirk Hammett.

It's in my blood, my mom's also a Hendrix fan.

Oh thats mean, even if it is partially true. However you do realize that a lot of times the bass player does more work than anyone else in the band. Steve Harris for example wrote most of the songs for Iron Maiden, including "The Trooper". Not to mention he's insanely awesome and a lot of the time his bass parts are better than the guitars. Geezer Butler also wrote the songs for Black Sabbath, until Dio came along.

yes, yes, back on topic. Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Tony Iommi, Dave Mustaine, Paul Gilbert, blah blah blah. And I foresee that this forum will die the second someone mentions Buckethead.

It was just a joke... I actually like the bass of alot of songs (sometimes more than the guitarist) it's just sometimes hard when you have a guitarist shredding over everyone else.

I think a lot of the best guitarists are the ones that are ignored in lieu of the "mainstream" guitarists. People always say Kirk Hammet from Metallica is great, but I personally think Dave Mustaine is clearly better.

I like John Sykes from Whitesnake
Stevie Vai, also from Whitesnake but also worked with David Lee Roth in his solo career
Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing from Judas Priest (Rob Halford is also my favorite vocalist)
Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton from Queensryche (Geoff Tate is another incredible vocalist)
Frank Hannon from Tesla
George Lynch from Dokken
Buck Dharma from Blue Oyster Cult

I love 80s metal. It's what I listened to as a child because my uncle and my father listened to it (they were pretty young when I was born). I have listened to Iron Maiden since 1986 (not long after I was born), and I love their music, but I didn't want to mention Dave Murray and Adrian Smith because I didn't want to sound like a Guitar Hero-playing poser.
