1. That's a gross over-simplification. You're watching two sets of eleven men working each with his own team to try and score more goals on the opposing team than the opposing team does on them. It is the gist of most team games, where the difference is what type of goal we're talking about.
2. This is entirely subjective. As a football fan, there are very few things I'd rather be doing during a good football match other than watching it. I love to see the often contrasting styles of play, the dynamics, the vision, and the teamwork that goes into winning a game. Granted, sometimes a game will be won by attrition, which can make them extremely boring to watch, but there are systems that place an importance on positive, attacking styles than defensive, boring ones, such as the relevance of the goal ratio. Sex is great, especially when it lasts for ninety minutes, but I won't assume that I'm going to be rabidly horny on each and every occasion a football match will be taking place.
3. Having an emotional attachment to a club or national team is each person's business. I don't think that other people's opinions should be relevant to one's own liking of an objective sport. The reason anyone might feel an emotional attachment to a sports team is the same reason people feel an emotional attachment to anything else in life.
4. I do not condone fighting over any sport. Actually, fighting is a bad choice of action in any case other than while being legitimately threatened. While it takes place sometimes in football, where emotions in fans and players alike rise to a boiling point, it is best to discourage it and ignore it as it is not an integral part of the game, nor a remote one.
5. Everything in life is about money except for what is relevant to each of us. You can always be rich and empty. Among the things that are important in life are love, passion, happiness, and pride in your work. Tell me if you haven't ever seen a sportsman cry or become emotionally unstable while playing. Tell me if you haven't seen footballers get severely injured and continue playing (I can name many who had their legs broken and went right back to football the day they healed). Football is a great way to make money, but as a kid no one dreams of the riches. The innocent in us all drives us in search of glory and of fulfillment, and whoever claims this is irrelevant to us completely has quite a bit of catching up to do. Money is the all-important resource in an industrial society, but that is far removed from what a fulfilled life really is. We are the only thing that can make our lives worthwhile. The love of oneself is the only thing that matters. Never let any amount of cynicism blind you from this fact. Furthermore, there are many examples of players who have refused numerous opportunities to grow richer while abandoning what they loved. Look to Francesco Totti for inspiration. Look at Paolo Maldini, who, along with Totti, has mastered his craft and remained with a single club for a lifetime. Look at Redondo who while injured refused to take payment from his club. Look at Arsene Wenger, an perfectionist artist who is willing to sacrifice medals for the beauty with which his team plays. Look at Djibril Cisse who, even after breaking a second leg, continues to play today. Cantona? Retired at the age of 30 to do what his heart desires, while he was the most coveted striker in the world. It's not all about the money. Principles, passion, and sportsmanship do exist. Examples can be found everywhere, should you choose to look.
6. Sometimes not. I'm terrible at football, but I've always loved the game. I used to play it all the time, but now that my life does not permit me much of the free time I used to enjoy while I was a child, I can't really play it. I have less fun playing it, at any rate, than I have watching it.
7. It's not for everyone. You don't need a beer and company to enjoy the game. I, for example, sometimes end up watching 10-minute highlights once I come back from class at 8 PM. Alone, in my room, I can sometimes jump in my seat from the excitement. Sometimes I exclaim verbally. If you depend on anything other than yourself to enjoy your life, I'll tell you right now that you are fucked and should, I should say, repartition.
