Football. Eug. Don't get me started. What is so interesting about it. Wow! Lets watch some one kick a ball in a net. In all fairness, I'll pass. I would rather do somthing creative like play bass or somthing.

I hate watching the game, but there is something about playing a friendly pick up game at the park that I love, I think it has to do with the fact that I get to kick some ass... just a hunch

I don't think it is fair to pick and choose all the worst aspects from every game genre to counter the criticisms of a single sport.

There are more varied and complex types of computer games than I have space to mention and as many varieties of sports from the refrained (Golf) to the violent and sometimes illegal (Boxing/Fighting/Shooting) and even the downright silly (Pro-wrestling/badminton)

So for this to be a fair discussion one must compare all forms of competitive spectator sport with all forms of computer and video games but for us to do that would be pointless as it is clear that both sports and gaming are popular and it would be pointless to argue about which was better (or as it seems, which is worse) as the flaws are obvious but manageable. There is no way you can convince a soccer fan to quit the sport if you make fun of the mincing fakers any more than you can convince a console player to quit from all the vitriolic fanboys.

But one common theme I can see that separated Sports and Gaming is that gaming is geared far more for players, while Sports is geared mainly for spectators rather than players. Yeah sure you can play football with your friends but the majority are spectators. This is what makes Gaming far far more appealing to me as it is entirely geared towards interactivity which is the amazing quality that when effectively used can amplify the significance of the simplest things to an emotional level far more than viewing even the most extraordinary event.

I don't care for American football, but soccer (football if you must insist) is downright tedious. If it were a video game, you wouldn't play it because of balance issues; the defense has a huge advantage over the offense, leading to games that just grind on and on and on and... You get the picture. Eventually someone scores a goal, apparently by luck, and then the clock runs out. Cue the rioting fans.
If you think I'm being particularly spiteful towards footie, have no fear. I'm just as hateful towards other organized sports. It's hard for me to imagine paying to watch a bunch of grownups chase a ball around.
I'd be willing to make a one-time exception if a New Zealand rugby team were in the area. Those Maori war chants are fun to watch.

I'm a big fan of AFL 'Football' and have been supporting my team (Essendon) ever since I moved to this country. As for soccer, well I'm European so it's basically forced on me in my house. I don't really hate it, but I do find it boring to a point.

Frankly, if you described sex the same way you describe football, it wouldn't seem to be any fun either. And the fact is that our brain is just as wired to like sports events (or other types of competition if you have a bias against sports) as it is wired to like sex.

The same reason I don't play sports games or watch any sports on TV. I would simply rather go play it with my friends, outside.

Outside!

I for one don't like watching soccer (football to Euros). It's extremely boring to watch, largely due to the extremely few times that anyone ever scores. A large majority of the time it comes down to "Team A has the ball...they kick it around...they kick it around...now Team B has the ball...they kick it around...they kick it around...now Team A has the ball" ad nauseum. I do however enjoy playing soccer, always have.

Now American football is what I really love watching. It has speed, toughness, coordination, and most important of all, strategy. In many ways, it's like watching a game of chess on a field. Coaches always trying to think of plays to counter the other teams plays. It's probably has the most depth out of any of the major sports out there.

College basketball is great to watch, NBA not so much.

Baseball is just plain boring as well. Maybe even more so than soccer.

I love watching basketball, and you can't argue that you can just go outside and play unless you have a court nearby or can somehow make one.

I like playing soccer, as I'm good with my feet

I can tolerate football, but there's always the nagging feeling that you could just play outside and toss the ball.

But I absolutely hate baseball as it's SO FUCKING BORING!!

American football?? Those wimps wouldn't last half a match of a game of rugby league. Stopping to rest after each tackle? All that padding and stuff? They'd freak out and run away. That said, sport blows, and those shaved gorillas in hotpants are treated far better than they should be. Theyr'e not bloody heroes, that's for sure.

I used to love football as a child, but I'm 24 now and sadly just see most players as over payed, borderline artarded, socially useless cry babies.

Footballers are supposed to be role models for the young 'uns and football is supposed to be something to teach you self discipline and get you active etc. If this is the genuine concern, why are most football games sponsored by Master Card, Macdonalds and all the boozes under the sun?????

Sorry, I can see why people would like to play football but the "professional" side of it is just a load of bollocks nowadays.

1. You're watching 22 grown men running around a pitch kicking a ball about.
Well it's 2 teams competing. To a set of rules. With an objective. It's almost like some kind of entertaing game.

2. There's easily more better, fun(and important)things you can do for 90 minutes, have sex anyone?

You can say that about anything. What a waste of a sentence! Would be interesting to hear what else would add to this list though.

3. I don't feel an "emotional" attachment for people I don't know who get paid gazillions for doing something a child could do, albeit alot better.
When Arsenal score my brother practically jumps and whoops for joy, my uncle is even worse, luckily they haven't both been in the same room yet, thank god.

You can also say that about a lot of things. Why do people cheer when they see a band play live? Why do people sing, dance and cheer in some churches? If you have a collection of people who share a passion for something then I think a little noise is unavoidable.

Something a child can do? Like the Olympic 100m was a waste of time this year because my little nephew learnt how to run the other day and its far more interesting watching that.

4. Fights fans get into over football are stupid and childish, do you think the team you support gives two shits? Really? Do they? No, they don't, it's all about the money.

In any hobby or passion you find this. Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony anyone? I personally will find myself raising my voice if anyone tries to tell that The Killers make amazing music. If you love something you will attach an irrational amount of effort to defend your favourite part of it. It comes from passion for it, and it will always sound childish because these are fights that can't be solved as they are based on unchangeable prefrences.

5. I never understood why some people say "It's never about the football now, it's about the money". Since when was it about anything else? You're talking about football as if it's a way of life or something important. And since when were footballer reliable role models? I would much rather look up to someone who actually contributes to the community and does something significant, what do footballers do? You guessed right, they kick balls about, what a great role model for our kids. Not.

a)So you honestly think football has always been a multi million kind of deal? It wasn't always. Yes it is now, but this happened over a long number of years. The reason is nearly everyone in the world loves football and there is pressure on the teams to do what ever it takes to keep winning and entertain their fans, therefore making more money. This means signing the best players and keeping hold of homebred talent. Over the course of 50 years, this has inevitably meant that the amount of money has gone up. It doesn't really matter, it still comes on the TV, and it doesn't lower my respect for the footballers. To perform at the level professionals perform at takes enormous sacrifice. It's not like they just decide to become a pro and get handed millions of pounds for that decision, its more like the millions are the reward for the success they have achieved.

b)I don't know you but I guess you have never been a part of a sports team. When you are a kid, it teaches the values of teamwork, friendship, dedication, hardwork and developing your skills. It's not just kicking a ball. Also give the kids a break. They look up to people who entertain them. If girls like Britney Spears then boys can like Beckham. And I'm sure they look up to policemen and firemen, etc. Give them some credit!

6. Wouldn't it be better to actually play football? Rather than sit down with a six pack of beer and watch it? Surely no wonder so many people are obese, instead of wanting to go out and have a kick about with friends which could benefit your health you would rather sit at home and watch the game on tv. you could be doing so much more in those 90 minutes.

The guys on the TV are professionals and they do things on the pitch with a football that just isn't really achievavble in the park on a pitch a quater the size of a professionala one, with smoking, beer drinking, TV loving lazy mates. That doesn't stop millions of people going to the playing in the park, playing at school, playing on Sunday teams, then chilling out in the evening and watching how the best do what they love. Also there are a lot of people who just can't play football for shit, but enjoy watching the game. Just like people can't draw or paint, but enjoy going to art galleries.

7. Atmosphere. This word gets chucked in my face so many times(2974 times including today now)and is the word used to describe the euphoria of watching a football match. They say if you can't beat them join them so I watched(well tried to watch)a game. I picked a team to "support", check, beer(even though I hate it), check, load, rowdy bunch of friends, check, remote, check, HD TV, check, let's begin.
15 minutes in and I'm asleep, I can't do it, I can't hack it, I don't know how people go through this shit, seriously.

If you were in a room of friends with beer and you fell asleep that says a lot about you! It's not like we don't talk to each other when we watch games with friends. But also, you just don't like football. That's cool! I'm sure most football could pointlessly dissect whatever you have a passion for and it would boil down to a)they don't really understand it, b)they would make sweeping generalistions about it and c) it wouldn't change mind about it anyway.

I'm not jealous of footballers, kudos to them earning millions for something everyone can do.

Again this point. They are athletes, and frankly the only poeple who can do what they do are other professional footballers. I mean have you run for 90 minutes before? Have you actually run for an hour and a half? Pass, cross and shoot a ball consistently over the period with pin point accuracy? Sprint of in pursuit of someone blazing for goal then courageously tackle them? Sure 'everyone' can give this a go, but put 'everyone' against the pros and they would fall flat on their arse.

football is gravely overrated.

In your poorly expressed, generalised and biased opinion.

I feel they should do a study like those ones where it says "We spend such and such time of our entire lives in bed" or something like that except entitle it, "Such and such of our entire lives is spent sitting in front of a tv watching two teams kicking a ball about and actually thinking that those playing care about you", I would donate money to have them conduct a survey on that.

And how much do you spend watching any old shit on the TV and playing videogames? Also do you honestly think that a football fan gives a crap whether a football player cares about them? Of course not. If anything it works the other wat round because if a player performs badly they will know about it from fans of their team, and it could affect their career.

P.S. I understand the off-side rule so don't try to be a smart ass.

I bet you don't understand the intricacies of setting up a play that would cause your opponents to be off side, or the amount of skill it takes for a team to cross the ball and have a striker run into space to receive it without being offside.

I think it's interesting how much aggression you seem to have against something you clearly have no interest in. Maybe it's the sense of being left out that has upset you so much?
