I don't have the money to justify paying release prices, but there are developers and titles that I definitely would purchase at full price or pre-order if I was able to.
I'm getting to the point where I don't. I do with CoDs and will do with Skyrim, Mario Kart 3DS, Kid Icarus, Cave Story, and a few others. But most games I don't bother getting straight away. Games like RAGE and Dark Souls I want but won't be getting until a price drop.
If it's that special a game and I desperately want to play it then yeah, I'll buy it on opening week. For me I tend to have alot of bad luck when it comes to not having games spoiled for me before the end, so for something like Portal 2 I rushed out to pick it up was soon as the store gave me a ring that my pre-order had arrived, took it home and played it all week on a total media blackout until I had the entire single-player finished (and then I did the same with co-op).
I occasionally buy small relatively cheap games on release but not big titles. The only one I can think of that I have ever bought on release is portal 2 but that was a stupid impulse decision, I wasn?t really thinking when I did that and portal 2 was released cheaper than most games. I usually only buy a game when it has dropped to $80. $100+ is a definite no.
What?s the rush anyway? the only problem is running into spoilers but I don't mind that too much. Most of the games I buy are a few years old.
1.) Is the game worth a full 60? If so, I'll buy release day. (This often ISN'T the case.)
2.) Do I support the company? If so, I'll buy release day. This really only occurs for a couple companies, in my case. Bioware, Bethesda, etc.
3.) Will major plot points inevitably be spoiled if I wait too long? If so, I'll buy it for the peace of mind that I experienced it and didn't just hear it through the grapevine.
Aeris dies. Carmine lives.
These things are important to me, and I'm glad I got to experience them, not just hear about them. It makes the game have more impact.
I usually don't buy stuff in release year, much less day or week. I like to wait until GOTY is $30 or less, and even that is pushing it. There are so many good older games around that it's easy to stay a few years (or even a decade) behind the curve and still play awesome games all the time. It helps that I'm using a laptop with an integrated video card and that I only got a current gen console last year. I might buy Diablo III at release, but only if my brothers do as well so that we can all play together.
I don't, I usually wait until they go down in price a bit because I can't afford to spend $70 everytime I want a new source of entertainment. Anyway, I do have the internet. But also, I'm never so utterly excited about a game to need it the moment it comes out.
Unless it's a game that I've been eying for a while now, then no, I rarely buy on release day.
Really, most of the time I buy something on release is sheer coincidence, since I've kinda stopped following release schedules.
I can't justify spending $60 on a game anymore. $40 is about as high as I'll go for a game that I consider a must-have. Civ V was the last game that I bought in its first week, and I played it for a couple weeks before loading up Civ IV and realizing how much more fun and polished it was. As I think I said somewhere at the time, Civ IV was an upgrade to Civ V.
Nice to see I'm not the only one here! I'm actually on the verge of buying Call of Duty 4 since it's $17 at my work this week. It'll be my first copy. As for new games in general, I won't buy about 99% of new games that are released on day/week one. I plan to grab Skyrim and Saint's Row 3 when those are put out, if not at midnight than that day.
And like Spud, I loves me some retro games. For the same price as a brand new, triple-A title I can grab several games from yesteryear.
Not anymore. Ive bought into the hype of games too many times.
Except for really really big stuff like skyrim, halo or gow. Cod would be one of those too if i was still a fan, but unless they adress the balance issues that keep popping up since after the first modern warfare i wont be getting the next one.
I really thought this thread was going to be about not buying early due to not wanting to be unpaid QA testers, since games can't seem to be released anymore without SEVERAL game fixing patches anymore.
Sadly Dark Souls looks like it still needs a few more patches judging from many vids of infinite consumable item spamming, bugged magic shield spell that makes you invincible instead of reinforcing your shield, and midcast spell swapping so you can cast a low charge spell more by way of a large pool primer spell.
Oh and the widely reported and documented total game freezes that are still rather frequent after 3 patches.
Despite all that, I've got mine arriving tomorrow.
*insert same ol rant about how my weapons randomly ignore all enemies in New Vegas BS*
I generally have a quite year, buying cheaper or pre owned games, but once November hits I normally have four or five games that are day of release purchases for me.
I only buy the games I really love on release day now (pretty much just mass effect, gears of war and borderlands). Anything else I will wait and get it cheaper down the road.
However, I will still rent the game from love film so that I can try it out before making the decision to buy. This way I get the game for a few weeks cheaper than I would from a high street rental store for a few days.
This also allows me to judge how worth buying the game is, depending on how much I enjoy it and if I complete it during the rental. If I do complete it before sending it back, I generally will not go out and buy it.
I have the disposable income to buy pretty much whatever games i want on release day, the most recent one being Deus Ex.
However hardly a month after the purchase the game went from £50 new to £18 on amazon. and the DLC pack is, what, £3.50?
Buying brand new often feels like a waste of money to me. I only ever do so if I am really looking forward to the game, eg, BF3 and Saints Row 3 are day 1 purchases for me, but will wait for the price drop on everything else because in a few weeks that game will be about 20-50% off.
I never used to buy games on release. However, the past few months, every game I've bought has been a day one purchase whether it was through Amazon or at Gamestop.
