I've always liked Christmas. Always will like Christmas. Sure, it's busier at stores and on highways, but people just tend to be a little bit nicer (at least in my neck of the woods). Most charitable donations occur around the holidays. It drives our economy and keeps me employed for another year. It's also one of the only reasons that I look forward to winter (since I hate winter while living in a place known for harsh winters, that says a lot).

I'm a sucker for Christmas Cheer and Holiday Spirit. One of the few things untainted by my ever-growing cynicism, surprisingly.

I like christmas, it's a chance to catch up with my family because we don't see each other quite often. Also, the city where I live (Leuven, Belgium) is fully decorated and it's quite nice to stroll around :p. I don't particularly care about the gifts etc. Our family never buys gifts for each other :p.

My mum died at Christmas time several years ago. It was her favourite holiday of the year. So, yeah, it's kinda been a downer ever since, but New Years has taken on a whole brighter, happier, more exciting feeling ever since!

Me and my parents never used to celebrate christmas, so I've never felt exited about it really. These days it just annoys me, as my free public transport card doesn't work on holidays.

Speaking as a Uni student I am so unbelievably excited for Christmas. 3 weeks where I don't have to do any work. 3 weeks of real food. 3 weeks of a bed with a decent mattress! "oh it's the most wonderful time of the year..."

It's known as getting older. Happens to most of us. Christmas is more stressful than anything now.

I still care about Christmas... just that I'd rather be getting back to work right now.

What?

I've got stuff to save for... and a language school to run.

Christmas was a pretty big deal to me straight through my twenties. I'd always travel home for Christmas, and it was pretty often the only time of year I'd get there. I got to see my parents, and relax in a warm and comfortable environment where I was sheltered from my day to day stresses, and my sister would often make the trip as well. It wasn't really about the presents once I got out of my early teens, it was about being with my family and relaxing. Shopping could be a little stressful and I hated the crowds, but Christmas always felt like a warm and loving time to me.

Since my Dad passed away, that kind of got broken. I've had to take those memories and very carefully lock them away. Christmas feels rather empty as a result. It's a time where an important ritual USED to take place, but now there's something hollow there.

The one saving grace is my girlfriend. She has a child's enthusiasm for Christmas. She loves giving and getting presents, and still gets very enthused about the decorations and the general atmosphere. So I get to experience a little happiness vicariously through her. But it's nothing like what it was.

I'll echo the feelings of many people in here. Getting old truly does suck, for many reasons. I'm a fairly whimsical person, and I don't part easily with the rituals of childhood. Sometimes life doesn't give you a choice, though.

I don't get that much time off from work, even though I am lucky enough to get Christmas eve off this year, but because it is always hectic where I work this time of year, I don't have time to fully appreciate the season.

It's a couple days off work and I have time with y family, but the lead-up is exhausting. My family donates instead of buying gifts (except for my aunt, she requires gifts and doesn't like donations in her name, but that's another story) so that helps with a bit of the work, but... yeah. My family doesn't enjoy it. There haven't been kids in the family since, well, we were kids, so it's been a chore, mostly, for many years.

This year is the last eyar my parents will live in the province, though, so I'm going to relish it as our (possibly) last Christmas together... especially in the house. They'll be selling the house our family has had for 27 years this spring, so it's not the holiday I'm cherishing, it's the family time in the house.

I suppose if there were kids it would be more holiday-ish, but... I fucking hate winter here. I'm ready to move to a different country, someone who wants snow can trade me. I'm so tired of snow and cold that from November-March I'm a giant recluse *****.
