I can't for the life of me figure out why people think RDR is FUN. I respect all the effort R* put into the game, all the random events, he weather changes, the animations and mini games, but the GAME IS SO BORING. Every mission is travel here by horse have a shootout, mission complete. Then you are stranded in the mission area, and have to travel all the way back to civilization for another round.

GTA IV had much more variety (at least going by memory, I actually somewhat enjoyed my stay in Liberty City) in the missions and the gameplay didn't stay static from hour 1 to hour 15.

I swear the only thing different from the beginning of the game to the point I'm up to now is that I have a sniper rifle. RDR is BORING AS HELL

RDR is much better than GTA4. RDR had a lot more to do than GTA4 did. Not only that, but thought the story for RDR was much more engaging and interesting. Now, maybe I'm a bit biased because I love Westerns, but Red Dead felt like a better, more complete game than GTA4 ever could.

I felt John Marston was a much better thought out and developed character.
I cared about that heart of gold rat bastard.
Nikko.....eh.

Not I. I'm really not big on the Grand Theft Auto series, though. I love Red Dead Redemption and I love Bully (obviously). I think both of those games are leaps and bounds better than Grand Theft Auto 4. Though The Lost and the Damned was a big step up for Grand Theft Auto 4.

I do have a big bias in that I'm burnt the hell out on city-based sandboxes.

Yes but the other 'thing's to do were were all boring to me. Picking flowers, skinning animals etc..meh. I honestly stopped caring about the story at hour 10. I'm literally forcing myself to play the game, and so far, nothing has changed from Marston wanting to find some two people (can't remember their names). The game is more polished than GTA but still, EVERY missions is a carbon copy of the last with different dialog

And Niko spends almost the entire game looking for only one person. That objecive doesn't change, but what engages the player are the situations that Niko becomes involved in. Same thing with RDR.

As far as the missions go, how do you define carbon copy? Couldn't the same case be made for GTA4? Honestly, it seems like you just don't like RDR, and not that it's an un-fun game.

You talk to someone, follow someone on horse (or have them ride you there) and then there is a shootout. EVERY MISSION is like this. The only ones I can recall that aren't are the missions where
you travel into the mine and have to push the machine gun out of it. Not really a deviation but the small 2 min portion of that mission pushing the cart makes it different I guess haha

you have another shootout but this time using the giant machine gun you picked up. Now thinking of it, there are two missions like this, one on a train and another in a fort

...and that's about it. GTA IV is far from my favourite game, I'm only using it because R* made both games. I can remember creative missions with the bank robbery being the best.

Just to inform you guys, I'm at a part of RDR

where I 'liberated' Mexico with the help of that guy who's gonna marry that girl I saved

...does the game get any different after this point? Or is it a couple more hours of Western shootouts?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't you say the same for GTA4 as well? You drive a car someplace, something happens, and then you shoot everyone? In fact, can this be said of most shooters? You go somewhere, shoot stuff, open doors, and move on.

Mexico is the worst part of the game by far.

Anyway doesn't sound like you like Westerns, as the problems you gave are all problems I could levy against GTA.
It's just a matter of preference here.

Its the fact that all the enemies have the same weapons from the beginning of the game and that the difficulty of these shootouts don't change as to why is why this is an issue for me. Add to this the fact that I'm 15 hours in of doing only this and you can see my problem

Is it? Well I believe I just finished that portion of the game. Does it get better? (in your opinion)

Actually I don't see your problem. Bringing GTA4 back into this, enemy weapons and tactics don't tend to change much the further you progress.

Like I said, I think at this point, we're going to be arguing taste more than anything right now, so there's not much more of a discussion we can have.

GTA 4 felt too long and I kept playing only to finish it. There were no twists or turns (except for that part near the end with Roman's wedding) - it was sort off boring. Not running over someone with an ice cream truck - nope. That's never boring. Don't get me started on those doing things with your friends or else they hate you forever dates. I don't care if you don't like me. I'm far too busy "living the American Dream" to care.

Captcha - sonic screw driver
Ha, best one I've gotten so far.

Yes, but it varies. It depends on whether you already know the ending or not. If you do, it will feel depressing and pointless. If you don't, analyze every detail concerning Dutch - it makes for an interesting story - and the government people who tell you what to do.

For me yeah it definitely did.

However I would warn that it seems RDR isn't really your thing so you probably won't like it much more. : c

If you do continue, make sure when in the wilderness part of West Elizabeth, always carry a shotgun and WATCH THE HELL OUT FOR BEARS.

For the record, RDR is one of my most favorite games in this generation.

I am actually in the middle of replaying GTA4 in it's entirety right now. So based on my recent experiences with GTA4, I found what you said about it to be very odd:

I'm almost done with the game, and well, I don't think it has anywhere near as much variety as you claim it has. As every mission is pretty comparable to RDR: Every mission starts with a drive to your destination - and a heartfelt deep conversation with whatever ally you happen to be paired with - followed by a shootout upon arrival. Then having to escape police when the objective is complete.

And if it's not this then it's: A chase - followed by a shootout. Following someone incognito - followed by a shootout. Stealing a car - in the middle of a shootout.

I don't think these 2 Rockstar games are pinnacles of variety, as they both (as well as every other GTA game) boils down to:

Step 1: Find Transportation
Step 2: ?????
Step 3: Profit! (literally)

The Bank Robbery mission is definitely the height of GTA4, and I wish it had more missions like that. But the truth is a grand majority of the other missions you'll ever get won't even come close to the level awesomeness that mission was.

Going by memory, many missions in RDR unfortunately don't come close to the awesomeness of the Fort Mercer assault.

It's fine that RDR doesn't appeal to you at all. But from my experiences with R* and it's videogames, variety was never their strongest point.

Honestly, I think the biggest difference between both games is in their settings. Things like variety, enemy tactics, what drives both protagonists - aren't all that different. Like, almost not at all.

RDR was great, in a gaming world that was starved for westerns.

GTA 4 was not as good as san andreas. All the fun, weird things in SA were pretty much gone in 4. Too many missions felt like busywork and having no mid-mission checkpoints drove me away from the game.

I still have hope for gta 5 though, judging from the improvements that have happened in games since "including bloody checkpoints).

I don't consider myself a fan of GTA4, but I have sunk a LOT of time into its multiplayer. The multiplayer in RDR is horribly unbalanced, and it doesn't have any interesting game-modes. Not to mention they held back most of the content for DLC.

GTA4 has many diverse game-modes, and you can choose to have the battle take place anywhere in the city. My favourite was cops 'n crooks. My friends and I had that down to a science. I'll never forget one of our victories. It was a highlight of my gaming career:

We joined a game of cops 'n crooks, and the lobby was full when the game began. One of my friends was the boss, so we were in control of our team. We told our team the plan as we gathered weapons and vehicles. I set the waypoint for the hotel on the southern end of central park. The plan was to have the boss take cover in there, so he can be easily protected, while I get the helicopter.

We raced to the hotel from the construction site in southern Algonquin, police in hot pursuit most of the way. We get to the hotel, and the boss takes cover in the elevator shaft, while the rest of the team covers the only entrance. My time to shine. Police are determined to get to the boss, but are caught off guard when I run outside. I kill 3 of them with head-shots, and make a getaway in a nearby car. Since I'm not the boss, none of the cops decided to follow me.

I get to the chopper, and tell the boss to get ready to move. Once I'm hovering above the hotel entrance, I could see the cop team still trying to reach the boss. Once my team knew I was in position, they erupted from the hotel. With all of the cops dead, I landed. "The boss has reached the escape vehicle!" I took off, turned a corner into time square, and waited for the scoreboard to appear.

I really wish we recorded that. Anyway, GTA4 is much better than RDR. Why didn't they have a similar game-mode? It could have included bank/train robbing! One team can ride the train, escorting an important shipment of some kind, while the other team tries to stop it. Why didn't Undead Nightmare add a game-mode inspired by L4D? Fight your way from Escalera to Blackwater, and board a ship out of there. The zombies could get worse at night, forcing you to hold out in a settlement. That would have been amazing.
