It sounds like you've not connected with the plot or the setting at all. I long ago bored of randomly driving around killing people in GTA so to have side tasks which go beyond that was pretty cool, as was exploring a different kind of world/setting.

The main reason people like RDR so much however is the story. John Marston is a great character and you really connect with him later in the game which makes what comes after all the more affecting.

In summary, come back to it in a few years when you're looking for something a little deeper from your games.

GTA 4 was pretty good but it has nothing on GTA 3.
I missed 3 first time round (did 1, 2 then jumped to Vice City) so bought it recently for my phone and have found it awful. Shitty controls, shitty aiming, terrible cutscenes, and an ultra generic plot. Maybe it was great at the time but it has not aged well at all.

I found the controls to be pretty good. You problem there might be because its on your phone. I found it the best GTA to just play around in though. Especially with the dodo cheat and things.

Everything that made GTA IV what it was, the darker atmosphere and differences to the older games in the series, was improved on in RDR. Dunno how you can't see that. If you don't like RDR, I don't see how you could even like GTA IV.

Gotta say I liked RDR a bit more, Marston was a much more well written character, he does what he does because his family is in trouble, Nico is in America for 5 seconds before he jumps back into the criminal underworld. Why? "I'm always looking for work"

There are a lot of reasons why I think RDR is better than GTA4, but the only one that really matters is that RDR doesn't have your bloody cousin ringing you up to take him bowling ever half-hour.

With the "ballad of gay tony" and "lost and damned" tied into the storyline of GTA4 the overall game can be amazing. I had most fun with GTA4 when i ignored all calls and just played the story. The side activities of GTA4 were no fun at all.

RDR did this way better besides the flower collecting "Yeah, i`m John, a former badass outlaw and i just love collecting those sweet looking flowers to decorate my horse and home."

Overall i like RDR more for nostalgia reasons and gory bulletholes but i needed a break from it. I played the sp to death and had even a savegames were i ignored all the strangermissions for the end twist.

When i`m sick of playing MP3 i`m going to install GTA4 again.

Well I played GTA IV for abut 2 hours before getting bored, and played a lot more of RDR, So I am gonna go with RDR. Though I can't really get into any Rockstar game since GTA Vice City.

Nah, I did that shit so I had help whenever I was in a tight spot. Roman was perfect for that awful moment in Rockstar games where no cars spawnfor 20 minutes; the taxi rides made up for his shitty character.

Red Dead was pretty dull in the storytelling department. The cut scenes were awesome but the gameplay let them down, it did become a chore to do the missions. It's a shame because the story itself is pretty good, especially when you start to near the end of the missions and head back to the North. But GTA4 was a massive let down in the story department. Good gameplay makes messing around fun but the driving was painstakingly bad and police chases were either brutal half hour sessions of trying to turn or 40 seconds of nothing. The best part of GTA was cut down.

So no OP, RDR > GTA4 anyday.

You're on the wrong side there bud.

GTA IV is a masterful game, only a fool would deny that, but RDR (and in case you didn't know I'm a huge RDR fan) is just perfect. It may not be my favorite game of all time (Skyrim) but I can't deny: its probably the best game I've ever played.

The setting of the Old American West has never been executed as well as in this game, hell the genre (Western) had never been executed in even any sort of fraction that is comparable to how R* accomplished it.

The gunplay is as polished (if not even more) as GTA IV's. Dead-Eye was implemented greatly into the multiplayer. The only criticism I had about that was the throwing knife cheat but they patched it, and that they should have kept the level 1 dead eye part of the level 3 dead eye (able to shoot in slow motion while keeping the dead-eye activated).

The horses are so beautifully drawn and detailed that I outright prefered them to GTA 4's cars, besides cars would have ruined the setting of 1911.

The story of GTA is amazing in how fluid the change of location and character hubs is from one part of the city to the next. In RDR it was a much more sudden change but still done just as fluidly and naturally.

Truly RDR is just indomitable in its genre in every aspect.

That's why I said I respect the game greatly. Its very atmospheric and the attention to detail is amazing. The way enemies react to where they are being shot is a nice touch and all but I find the game very easy and slow paced. 15 hours in, I haven't really been challenged yet, and I found most of the main story missions very repetitive.

GTA IV suffered from the same thing, but I felt that the bustling city was more enjoyaable to play in than a barren landscape, and the weapon variety offered a little bit of a difference when in shootouts.

Plus getting 5 stars and trying to survive is always fun. (I should try it RDR, what happens?)

i preferred RDR because Liberty city was way too small to feel like a real city and because RDR had few and small settlements I found the world more believable. not real world believable but movie believable (like old clint eastwood flicks where no city had enough houses for all the people there). gameplay wise they are pretty much the same but i preferred the regenerating health and healing items in RDR, because i didn't have to stop exploring out of fear of loosing my progress when i die.

Red Dead Redemption had a huge world that actually felt alive, compared to GTA's carbon copy of New York.

Red Dead Redemption had better combat, actually showing where you hit the person with a bullet, and I will take a horse chase over a car chase any day.

Red Dead Redemption had checkpoints. I don't know what rockstar was thinking about when they decided to have check points removed.

All in all, Red Dead Redemption wins.

Less cousins, more horses, hilarious glitches. I'm confused where the argument is coming from, with massive pros like that in RDR's favor.

BIG AMERICAN TITTIES, NIKO!
OT:I got bored of GTA IV half way through. I would've gotten bored of RDR, but it was the perfect western game; long moments of build-up and moral questioning, followed by entertaining gun fights, and to close it all up, a sad ending!

good point, i hated the "man dates" in GTA IV just irritated me beyond belief. "hey buddy you wanna go bowling?" "no fuck off you annoying **** turn on the fucking news and you'll see im busy carrying out my mass genocide of the citizens of liberty city"

OT: GTA IV was good but it wasnt as good as RDR. RDR had so much shit going on plus the wanted system is a lot better in RDR. i was getting tired of the 5-star system. also the story was better i liked johns character a lot more

I thought they were both great for their own reasons. Thought the multiplayer for GTA IV was slightly more entertaining, but the single-player campaign in RDR was far more engaging and immersive in my experience.

You obviously don't remember GTA IV very well then. There is not a single facet of that game which is describable as 'good' beyond the city's creation. And even then it's an ugly fucking game.

RDR certainly retains Rockstar's trademark flaws (namely, the pacing, which is atrocious), but it's a lot better than GTA IV.

I am very biased towards westerns so I'll always choose RDR over GTA IV.

Then again, I also found the combat, stories and characters to be considerably better in RDR.

I also loved the open feel of RDR's world. Sure, it may take a while to ride somewhere but that's the beauty of it. The lone gunman, seeking redemption, riding through the wilds under an open night sky. You can stop and hang out with the stranger at a campfire on the side of the road. You can ride right past the damsel in distress, being chased by a pack of wolves. You can see the heat reflecting off the hills ahead of you in the mid-day and hear the snakes rattling and coyotes calling. Ambience doesn't get much better than this.
