Asking me to choose a single favourite party member is impossible. You'd just get a list of ten or so.

However, I will say that the Arishok easily gets the non-party NPC award. That fellow was great horned lump of ambulatory solidified awesome. He, and the qunari in general, give a very good impression of coming from a society with completely different norms and values and whatnot. And yet, I still ended up feeling some sympathy for the big bugger.

Varric and Aveline. Varric because he's awesome, and Aveline because I truly believe her to be the best written and most completely actualized character in the series.
I wouldn't go so far as to say "best", but I also really like Avaline. Hugely underrated character.

In particular, I liked how her role in combat matched her personality. She has the whole guilt-driven guardian complex going on and would probably take a bullet for a stranger. And in combat her job is to take hits to protect her weaker allies. Very appropriate.

Shale, definitely. She was interesting and funny, and a very very useful party member. I haven't played a single playthrough without her being a tank in my party.

Special mentions go to Oghren and Isabella.

Fenris. The final fantasy reject. Why? Just trolling.

Personally, I like Flemeth because of her back-story and her immense power level (over 9000), not to mention she did have a backup plan in case she was defeated in battle too, being able to come back from the death is quite the feat I supposed. I do hate her new wardrobe in DA2 though.

Sir Pounce-a-lot

He was the only thing keeping Anders funny and likable as a character.

Definitely Master Wade and Herren.

Joking aside I think it is between Alistair and Loghain.

Morrigan was good, but I can't stand how the games keep focusing on her and Flemeth and saying "Look at them! Aren't they cool? They've got a very interesting story, you know? More interesting than yours, by the way; you could never hope to be involved in the overarching storyline they have between the two games so we'll make you feel like a secondary character in your own biography".*End rant*

Shale no question about it. Best Character Ever.... Nothing wrong with absolute hatred for pigeons and stomping on chickens.

Asha'bellanar or Flemeth if you like. I just think there is a lot going on with her that the player is unaware of.

Who do you think is the best support character in Dragon Age? It doesn't just have to be a party member. It can be any NPC in the game.

I'd have to say that I'm stuck between Morrigan and Varric. They both have a certain charm about them and their humor that I'll surely miss. It was a shame that Morrigan was referenced to in DA2 but never actually seen.
It's a tossup between Varric and Shale, with Dog as the runner-up.

All the other characters, especially those in DA2, are bland and uninteresting.

Morrigan is probably my one my favourite characters from any game. She actually to acted human, seemed to have real emotions. She had an interesting backstory, a complex relationship with her mother and motivations which are left unclear.

Not to mention her witty banter didn't make your ears bleed. (Which is quite rare for bioware)

Despite hating Dragon Age 2, I thought the Arishok was pretty good. He made for an interesting adversary.
Although Zhevran was pretty awesome too. He was absolutely no use at all in my party, but he was great to talk with, and his situational comments were fantastic too.

There can only be one answer. Morrigan. The sexy, bitchy sorceress that no party should be without. You're a mage? Well let Morrigan help you destroy enemies faster. No mage? You NEED Morrigan to survive! And she always had the best conversations. Just listening to her mocking Sten only to have it turn around and blow up in her face was great.

Tie:
Zevran because he's an unconventional badass without the stereotypical master assassin stupidity. And that accent (swoon). Or Flemeth for being the best modern interpretation of the classical fairy tale witch I've ever seen in a game (hell, in anything).

I liked Morrigan's voice acting and she was entertaining at first, but I felt like she really got very little development and spent most of the game telling you things that you learned about her in the first five minutes after meeting her.

Edit: Nevermind, upon thinking about it, Flemeth wins hands down. They fucking nailed it.
