I find picking just one hard. I guess I'd have to go with Morrigan in Origins, just because she's essential to the plot, otherwise I might go for Zevran or Shale, or Alistair... or Sten, or Leliana. I like everybody except Wyne, really. I even have a soft spot for Oghren.

In Dragon Age II, the only character I really found interesting was the Arishock

This thread makes it seem like Sten was a character not many people used.

I admit, in my first playthrough, I barely used him as well (I thought 2h warriors were too weak, and too slow.) And I thought he was boring too. His stern no-bullshit warrior character wasn't appeal at all to me. Until I used him.
Since I was incredibly disappointed with the way my character was turning out, I decided to restart the game.

I used him a lot more once I figured out how 2handed warriors are supposed to function, and he turned out to be a pretty powerful character. And surprisingly hilarious. Also, his fondness of cookies. I mean, who doesn't love cookies? (I lost it pretty hard when Sten admitted to stealing cookies from a fat kid because "he didn't need them.")

I enjoyed his insightful and at times hilarious comments on ferelden culture, trying to gain his respect, and learning that he actually really misses his homeland and his people. I got a real sense of gratitude from him once you found his sword, he was actually smiling because of it! You're welcome, Sten.

Although I felt the Arishok was a disappointing character. To me, he came off as whiny and overly brooding. He was a pretty good character, just not what I expected. Hell, I thought Sten would've make a better Arishok.

Overall, I really loved the entire cast from the first game. I thought the entire party were very loveable, and even Logain turned my opinion about him later in the game.

In DA2, I couldn't stand a lot of the characters. Except for Varric, and Merrill.

Loghain.

He started out as a boring generic villain, but got a lot more intriguing when you realised that he genuinely believed he was doing what he was doing for the right reasons. Given the king's idiot actions, hell I even agreed with him. Return to Ostagar gave even more back story to his motivations and if you

invited him to join the Grey Wardens there was a lot of really interesting interaction, especially with the other characters. Given Alastair annoys the hell out of me, he is my usual choice at that part!

Always nice to have morally dubious characters in games, and ones who aren't the obvious candidates for heroes.
Yeah this, I always regretted never recruiting Logain. Mostly cuz I did different endings that I wanted Alistar around for. I never got around to completing the one I was gonna get Logain with.

For me I'd rank them:
Shale > Zevran > Varric > Isabella > Morrigan > Leliana > Dog > Everyone else >>>>>>>>>>>>> Merril > DA2 Anders > Sten.

Loghain was well written once he joins you, but it really doesn't gel with what we'd seen of him before then.

Shale. I absolutely adore Shale and keep bugging the folks at BioWare to work her into future DLC. I specifically asked for a Shale/Varric buddy-movie style adventure, but I'm not holding my breath, or anything.

I gotta go with Varric, though Morrigan is a close second.
Same here. The conversations those two could have while walking around where great to listen to. The frolicking one is a good example.

Can I say witty Hawke? Or is it the fact that I gave him a serious look and the punchline works better that way?

Oh Alright, Alistair and Varric.

Sten.
They had some funny conversations, but I did not get attached to most characters.
Some characters, especially Merrill and that super-girl pirate thingy in Dragon Age 2 are ones that I hated. Really, hated. There was NOTHING interesting in them for me.

I had a lot of fun watching Merril stumble her way through the process of becoming a more social person but overall Isabella in DA2 would probably be my favorite. Her side-banter especially with Merril and Aveline made the game so much more enjoyable

Morrigan and Alistair. Their conversations are hilarious to listen to.

Varric probably comes on top. Along with Arishock. :D

Morrigan every time for me, not only are her looks worthy of pitching trouser tents, but her voice, attitude, her tremendous wit and her icy cold heart which slowly melts over the course of the game is truly a triumph of characterisation for me.

Failing that, I won't say no to Isabella - who's a lot of fun, streetwise and handy in a bar room brawl. Kind of like having a cool big sister around or something.

Though when it comes to having a Dragon Age Bro, it's gotta be Varric. Raconteur extraordinaire - and one of the most strangely charming blokes I've ever seen in a game.

What? No love for Velanna? As a bitchy uptight Morrigan replacement she's not bad (especially if you play a Dalish Elf Warden)

Also quite liked Finn and Ariene from Witch Hunt. They had amusing banter.

Finn: So, does your name mean anything special in Elvish?
Ariene: *sigh* why do people always ask that of people from different cultures? Were you named after a part of a fish?

It's a tie between Alistair, who I just adore and love, and Varric because he is just amazing, both were very well written and both were lovable.

For me it would have to be Morrigan or Oghren, I loved them both. Honourable mention would have to go to Merrill because she was just adorable.

And no, I'm not joking.
I did like Sten. But I did think he was pretty much just a giant brick with the personality of a sad rainbow.
