Carrot from the Discworld novels, never seen someone else
stopping, or at least pausing, a war by organising a football match between the 2 warring armies.
Or Death, also from the Discworld novels. So powerfull, yet so ignorant and lovable.

Edit: What the hell?! Where did that "token" thingy come from?

The Stalker Grike, from the Hungry City Chronicles. I have read few things cooler than his self-narrations from the first book.

Lilith, from the book titled the same by George MacDonald.

Not only does she rule the world with an iron fist merely by her fearful presence, but she also manages to steal water itself and clutch it tightly within her palm. Oh, and she pulls a Heel Face Turn [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeelFaceTurn] from the depths of the Complete Monster [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CompleteMonster]. Unfortunately, she was also a Death Seeker [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DeathSeeker] and as such did not make it far beyond her alignment shift.

Arthur from The Keys to the Kingdom series.

He's pretty badass.
I'd have to disagree with you there my friend, Arthur is a great character with his own problem, but nothing about him stands out as badass, just the weapons he gets.

Well yes but you see, How he is able to handle himself with the massive amount of power he is in control of, the things he sees that would give most people serious issues, and just the obstacles he overcomes, demonstrates a great inner strength and wisdom That really makes him a more badass character than it seems from eye level.

Kvothe wins this one. Not only is he brilliant to a level of sheer absurdity, but he's an incredible musician. And chicks dig him. Whether or not he actually notices it.

Sam Vimes - Discworld

Anyway I read the Drizzt stuff. I read it for a while and then realised I couldn't stop. The problem was that I wanted to stop because I didn't like to books or any of the characters. R. A. Salvatore uses these narrative tricks to get you hooked, you know, cliff-hangers and stuff. For instance my favourite character
died like five times
causing me to keep reading. When I figured that he
only came back to life
so you would keep reading I felt cheated and tricked.

In short, those books got on my nerves.
I was going to say vimesy too. I thought he was at his best in night watch, where he had the image solid snake was going for but failed to do.

As for villains it is another trophy to disc world with mr tea time, or "teh timeh"

Kylar Stern. A young assassin around 17 years old who is trained by the best. His stealth and weapons are amazing.
see the "Night Angel trilogy" for more details

Constantine from Hellblazer.
I'll second that. Failed magician, no one ever thanks him for saving the universe (again), chain-smoker, eats like shit, He's British and has the ugliest trenchcoat ever. :D

Death is good too. But somehow... he's just a little generic.
