Another year draws to a close, and once more we must ask ourselves this very important question: who was the best girl/best guy of anime?

For the sake of fairness, let's try and limit this to characters who made their debut on the screen, both big and small, this year.

My pic is Kaoru and Hajime from I Can't Understand What My Husband is Saying.

The characters made me laugh harder then most comedies do, and despite their shows 3 minute run time I felt that some episodes gave them more belivability, depth and characterization then some characters get in a full series. Hajime's actions and Kaoru's reactions to them helped, I felt like he was one of so many people I know. If my girlfriend where more 'normal' instead of the big nerd we both are, I could almost see it being a parody of my own life.

Who was your pick for this year?

Sure why not...

Best Guy- *insert drumroll* Umetarō Nozaki (Gekkan Shōjo Nozaki-kun)
A highly amusing character from an overall excellent series that did an excellent job of taking the piss out of anime and manga creation in general.

Best Girl - Chaika Trabant (Hitsugi no Chaika)
Don't know why Japanese caveman talk is adorable but it is. Also the evolution of the character through both seasons of this series was very well done.

Best Child - Naru Kotoishi (Barakamon)
Felt that Naru was worth mentioning as she is one of the best child characters I've encountered in any media or medium. A bundle of personality and energy that drives what has become one of my favorite slice of life shows.

The best guy award easily goes to Bulat from Akame Ga Kill! The buff, sexy man with a hairstyle to die for.

Mother fucker is a boss at fighting, gay, and can somehow get his hair back to the styled state in like ten seconds.

The best girl is a little more tricky... all I've watched this year completely through is Akame Ga Kill!... So this award shall go to Isuzu Sento from Amagi Brilliant Park. Since I've only watched episode one, I only have a few reasons to like her. The rockin' hair, the bod, and the musket. Gotta love the musket!

The only anime I watched this year was a movie called The Tale of Princess Kaguya (by Isao Takata, he of Grave of the Fireflies). Naturally it wins my Best Anime Girl Trophy 2014.

I've not seen much either but i'll have to go for someone in Akame ga Kill even though i'm stuck on Episode 7 because the events of Episode 6 were too much for me...

Mine or Sheele. I think Mine because i've always had a soft spot for chicks with guns. That and her early interaction with Tatsumi where she saves him from some guy he was grappling with by making a sick shot past his head was gold.

"You're a sniper, I trust you"

*takes the shot*

"The fuck was that, you almost hit me! You're a fucking shit sniper!"

Man, I like Tatsumi, sign him up for the guy list too. The way he didn't dick around in Episode 1 was cool too. Perfectly cold and methodical towards the one ***** he killed where other protagonists would be all "oh killing is bad, woe is me" for 20 episodes. Still he needs to up his style points, he wears what appears to be a white woolly jumper and jeans.

RIP Sheele though... Man this going to be one of those... Like a fight or whatever is going fine then exactly one frame later some important, beloved character is dead as fuck.

The guy in Amagi Brilliant Park can come too even though i've watched only 2 or 3 episodes. That speech to all of the mascots in the park about how all of them are terrible and you need me to save you. So good.

Also since the OVA came out this year i'll add Tomoko from Watamote. I know she's awful at pretty much everything social and everything she tries to do ends up backfiring but like... at the end of the day, all she has is an earnest desire to make friends. That's really the kicker behind Watamote, and why some people find it more sad than funny (including myself) behind all the comedy it's about a girl trying her hardest just to make at least one friend. I can't not relate to that.

I've recently been gushing over Rin Tohsaka from Fate/Stay Night right now.

I also love Seo Yuzuki from Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun. She brings me joy every time she's onscreen:

As for best guy, I really like Space Dandy and Favaro from Rage of Bahamut.

*Looks up*

... son of a ...

Best girl: Saber from Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works. I don't know, I've always been a fan of Saber, Ufotable just make her even more cuter somehow. It basically triples all feelings I got from her in the Visual Novel. I wish they did the Fate route as well. T_T

Honorable mentions: Akane Tsunemori from Pyscho Pass. She would be on top, but she was best girl in the year Psycho Pass started. She got this because she develouped a fuck ton since the first season, she is a badass, great detective, and somehow even gets to be a little cute on the side.

Best guy: Kirito ... ... ahaha, that was a joke. Shinichi Izumi from Kiseijuu. I feel that his representation from the manga was extremely accurate, even if his design is a tad different to modernize the anime. Plus, I've always loved how he changes in the series, especially his facial animation.

Honorable mentions: DIO ... fuck, can't say that yet. Um, lets go with Joseph Joestar. That's one awesome old dude who still has his ...

... mojo.

Crap, my picks are taken, might as well second them

Best Girl: Rin Tohsaka from Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works- funny, determined, snarky and adorable; she seems to be both thematically strong and a badass on screen and I can't wait to see Shirou and Rin bounce off each other

Honorable mention: Saber from the same franchise- yes, its a bit obvious to pick the second most popular of the heroines (poor Sakura) but, having entered the fate franchise from Fate/Zero, Saber has both her steel edge and some small moments of adorable childishness, particularly with food and competition.

Best Guy: Favaro from Rage of Bahamut- A much more comedic hero, thanks to an excellent voice casting, Favaro manages to go through all his dangers with a snarky smile on his face and a witty comeback while developing towards the end.

Honorable mention: Archer from Fate Stay Night UBW- more on this list for badass than humor, Archer carries himself with a cold precise air and manages to be imposing in all his scenes.

He was the Best Guy in 1998, is now the Best Guy of 2014, might as well be the Best Girl too, and will be the Best Both again in 2015:

My favourite guy was Mikoshiba (the red-haired guy from Nozaki-kun). He's such a conflicted character and despite how manly he seems to think he's the inspiration for Nozaki's female lead.
Bol from Akame ga Kill gets a close second because he was just so nice for someone so completely twisted in evil.

As for female; hard decision for me, but I'll say... no wait. errr. [small]Damn it, I wish I could just pick Ryuko Matoi every year![/small] I'm going to go for Shiro from No Game No Life. She exudes power and control without seemingly doing anything and it's just a sight to behold. Close second goes to Frederica from Chaika. I just enjoy the idea of someone who's only helping you so that they get to fight you to the death afterwards. Shame the series got cut short and we never got to see that.

Best anime guy for me was........Nyanta from Log Horizon. Even though hes a cat, hes still a male, with great etiquette and kick ass cooking skills.

Best anime girl for me is a somewhat more subdued character than I usually cling too. I speak of Akane Tsunemori from Psycho Pass! Something about her doing whats right and what is just, but getting screamed at and being told that its wrong seems oddly familiar to me....

I don't watch anime because on the whole I don't like it. That said, Netflix put the original gen1 pokemon seasons up this year and I've been watching those a whole bunch. So my best animu character of 2014 goes to none other than:

That's right, Pikachu.

Best girl of 2014 by a long shot is definitely Chiyo Sakura.

She's adorable, smart, funny and makes the best faces. I just want to hug her.

Best guy would probably be Toshinari Seki.

Easily one of the funniest silent characters I've seen. Also, Rumi would be a second place for my girl of 2014.

This year was fucking awesome in the anime department, let's see what's starting next month........................fuck.

I'll also take Chaika as best girl, Joseph as most awesome dude (the second season, he's getting insanely nerfed in this season).
Same here on both account (heh, if Chaikai role really was to act meek and helpless, she got me competely good!). Joseph is still awesome (especially when his stand is not at full form) and hillarious at speaking English-

Oh God! The last half of the video had me in stitches!!!

Technically Kill la Kill ran until March of 2014, so I imagine that counts? Odd it hasn't been mentioned yet.

Best Girl 2014 for me would have to be: Ryuuko Matoi from Kill la Kill! For some reason I just really liked her and thought she was a relatable and very compelling protagonist.

Honorable mentions include: Mako and Satsuki (also from Kill la Kill), Rita and Amira (Shingeki no Bahamut), Murano (Parasyte), Holly Kujo (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure), Motoko Kusanagi (GitS: Arise) and Akane (as mediocre as Psycho-Pass 2 was).

Best Guy 2014? Joseph "HOLY SHIIIIEET" Joestar from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, of course! He's just the fucking best, 'nuff said.

Honorable mentions include: Mohammad Avdol (also JoJo's Bizarre Adventure), FAVARRRROOOOO (Shingeki no Bahamut), mother fuckin' Izumi and Migi (Parasyte) and Batou (GitS Arise).

Best Girl: If Kill La Kill counts as 2014 (see above), Satsuki Kiryuin. Otherwise, add another one for Rin Tohsaka.
Honorable Mentions: Ami Mizuno and Makoto Kino from Sailor Moon Crystal, Stephanie Dola from No Game No Life, Sinon/Shino Asada from SAO II, Scarlet from Space Dandy II, Marika Tachibana, Seishirou Tsugumi and Kosaki Onadera from Nisekoi, Yona from Yona of the Dawn, and Michelle K Davis from Terraformars. Wow, I didn't realize I'd have that many.

Best Guy: Oh my god! It's another win for Joseph Joestar.
Honorable Mentions: Dandy from Space Dandy II, Baby, Kaitou Kid/Kaito Kuroba from Maigc Kaito 1412, Rei Ryugazaki from Free! Eternal Summer, Sora from No Game No Life, and Yuugo Hachiken from Silver Spoon II.

Let's see, anime from this year that I've actually seen. Ummmm... shit.
Oh! Wait! Fate/Stay Night! I've been watching that one! Just pick my favorite girl from that.... Oh. Shit.
Damn you guys for forcing me to choose between Rin and Saber. I guess I'll go with Saber, because of her sheer adorableness.
