Right now, I work in a condensed matter physics lab testing the light absorption properties of gold nanoparticles. And, since the escapist community seems to be very open to admitting who they are, I was wondering how many people here do research. Is it historical, literature, english, sociological, physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, geology, geography?

I'm currently working with game theory for my master's thesis. It's pretty cool!

Im a historian studying the US involvement in the European campaign of World War II. Currently my research is regarding airborne troops. I am looking to see how their tactics differed from those of standard infantry troops given their tendency to operate behind enemy lines or at least in the very front of the line often with little support.

I'm not doing it quite yet, but probably will start helping some of my professors with their research sometime in the next year (I'm currently being encouraged to ask around and see what everyone is working on and to pick my favorite.)

Currently researching the Inuit for an anthropology paper, not that it really counts.

Also working in a toxicology lab studying the effects of oil from the Athabasca tar sands on different soil samples using plants I swear I'm allergic to (which is soooo much fun), earth worms, and springtails.

Is this for biophysics or computing use? or something else entirely?

Second year undergraduate at the moment in Biochemistry. Over the summer I'll be using confocal laser microscopy and Green fluorescent protein labelled cells to study golgi body movement in plant cells. Basically it lets you see cells in real time.

I'm a professor of Musicology and my main area of interest in Popular Music of the United States and Europe, secondary areas of interest include American Music in general and 20th Century Music. I specialize in cultural theory, focusing on gender, race, sexuality, region, and class issues. Most specifically, people often come to me to talk about German Popular Music of the Weimar/Nazi era and African American/African diasporic music.

Last semester worked as a undergraduate research assistant in an inorganic chemistry lab. We worked mainly with crystal structure - both synthesizing them and identifying/cataloging them via x-ray spectrometry.

Part literature, part computer science, part theatre history--I'm doing a PhD thesis revolving around attributing authorship of Elizabethan plays in cases where the author is unknown or questionable. (This isn't, I should hasten to add, one of those "Shakespeare didn't write Shakespeare" things; those people are nuts.)

OMG I am so jealous! In my second year of teaching I went to a summer program at Rutgers for math teachers to work on Graph theory and some game theory. It was the first time I was exposed to those maths and I fell in love! Unfortunately, neither was on the curriculum in NYC schools, so I was only able to share my teachings in a very cursory way. Now, sadly, I feel like most is forgotten :(
Perhaps that's something I can fiddle around with on this über-boring medical leave!
