Who was the guy with a horse head at Comicon supposed to be?

Actually, there were quite a few. I'm thinking maybe he was supposed to be Bojack Horseman from Netflix's new show, but that's too new for people to be cosplaying as him.

Any input you have on the matter is appreciated.

It's just a silly fad. People have been wearing horse masks for a good while now. I even bought my sister one as part of an X-mas gift.
According to a quick internet search, the horse mask was originally sold by novelty purveyor Archie McPhee as a Halloween costume since at least 2003.

That is scary. Not scary scary, as in The Descent (2005) scary.

More like Doctor Who circa 1977 scary[footnote]Perhaps not quite at the level of, say, Horror of Fang Rock[/footnote]. Still, it's disturbing nonetheless.

I always thought wearing a horse head was an allusion to Animal Farm, the horse head serving as an allegory to the Russian working class. Reminding us that even with the best intentions movements can be betrayed by those they support, like the Russian working class were betrayed by the Stalinists after they helped remove Tsar Nicholas and form the Soviet Union.

I remember first "horse's head" image from before 2010 and it was the wierdest thing on internet not originating from east Asia.

accompanied with image of horse that crashed through the front glass of some smaller car that I will not show here.

I always thought that kicked it off.

My belief has always been that it is an literal allusion to "high horse". As in "get off your high horse" only, in these chases, the horse is actually high. (on drugs that is)

It's a 2ch (the japanese site 4chan ripped off) meme, there was a horse mask in a Japanese insurance company commercial.

Will forward your response to a friend who is also wondering.

Kinda off topic, but are pre-2005 Doctor Who episodes worth watching now or am I likely already spoiled by 2005-present?

EDIT: Added this to the email http://mcphee.com/shop/horse-head-mask.html

Whoa! That's the first time I've ever heard anyone mention The Descent (2005)! I take issue with it: that movie was not scary! The Ring--that shit's scary! The Grudge, pretty scary too. More recently, V/H/S was pretty fucked up. That first segment, anyway. Kinda got worse as it went on. V/H/S 2 can suck a bag of dicks.

So I would actually say yes, the horse head guy is as scary like The Descent (2005).

...what was this thread about?

YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!!!!!

I'm so glad to hear someone has the same ideas about horror movies as I do. :D In fact, I'm not kidding when I say that The Ring is the last movie that truly scared the shit out of me even AFTER I got home from the theater. And I believe that V/H/S is a rare example of modern horror that really does belong in any list of the greatest horror movies of all time. But the second one? Holy shit! They turned it into nothing but a boring-ass zombie schlockfest. Every segment I kept waiting for something that didn't include zombies, and was let down from beginning to end.

For the record, I also thought The Conjuring was a boring, over-hyped movie.

(Sorry... I'm a HUGE horror movie buff and none of my horror threads have gone anywhere on this forum.) ;)

OT: When I see the horse heads, this is all I can think of:

Horse head is just a meme, popped up on 4Chan one day and now it's spread and people do it for shiggles.

Well, it's still pretty good stuff, but it's very different from post-2005 Doctor Who. It feels much more like pulp sci-fi and tends to move at a slower pace, kind of like very early Star Trek. The stories tend to go on for several episodes, strung out across 4 or 6 rather than just being a self-contained episode. In the 6th Doctor's era the shows become 44 minutes long instead of 22, but the stories are still strung across more than one episode.

I still think it's interesting, they focus more on character relations and plot than special effects or huge setpieces, at least until they get a bit more budget to actually have bit setpieces. A lot of times you'll spend a lot of time with characters you've never met just setting up their world before you ever even see the Doctor or what he has to do with that world.

This guy on YouTube [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vkb5MC1CQy0] has a retrospective on every Doctor now, and lists the best and worst stories of each, so you might check him out just to see what episodes to sample if you ever do decide to dig into Classic Who.

OH, and fun fact! The show went into color at the start of the third Doctor's era. While the show was popular, they still didn't have a big enough budget to switch to color AND keep making elaborate sets and costumes for alien worlds, so in order to break even they had to trap the Doctor on Earth and have him grounded there for a while. So at the end of the Second Doctor's last story arc called The War Games, the Doctor ends up ticking off the Time Lords (who are only first named as such in that episode) and they force him to regenerate and banish him to Earth as punishment. Of course eventually they get the budget again and are able to make those elaborate sets again, but most of the third Doctor's adventures are on Earth with head of UNIT (yes, UNIT is actually a classic Who thing) Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and his favorite form of terrestrial transportation, a yellow car named Bessie.

"Reverse the polarity of the neutron flow" is also a third Doctor thing. Jon Pertwee hated it when the writers tried to make him spout technobabble, so they had to try and write as little of it as possible. One day they run "reverse the polarity of the neutron flow" by him, and he loved it, so he uses it several times throughout his run because it's about the only technobabble he would say.

I think modern special effects might have spoiled you, yeah. It's hard to say really. I haven't seen a lot of the newer episodes, but in the 4th Doctor era it seems the writers were more willing to have the doctor visit alien worlds, which in turn required entire sets to be built on stage. Either that or film in a rock quarry :)

I think the main obstacle with older episodes is that there's just so many of them. And while some are available on Netflix, it's an incomplete experience. They're on Amazon Prime instant video as well.

Alright, I'm going to break one of the cardinal rules of the Internet and ask if I'm the only one who finds that mask creepy?

Pretty much agree. It was only OK at best.

Funny, the last thing to scare me was probably Doctor Who, the first time we encountered angels.

Will do, great post with lots of information. I will share with the guy that got me hooked on post 2005 Doctor Who.

After I watch Lilani's youtube link, I'll try to whittle it down to some of the best, but yeah, I do not have time to catch up on 50 years of episodes.

So creepy that the thread has been derailed into talking about horror. And Doctor Who.

It's a meme. A lot of the LAD (LadBible, Uni Lad) facebook pages use them (see their ice bucket challenge. It's amazing.

Yeah... most horror movies just aren't scary. I love a good, truly scary.... anything! But I haven't been scared by a movie since... yeah, The Ring sounds about right. It's just been games recently. Outlast had some good scares in it... and uhh... no, just Outlast. I am somewhat interested in Five Nights at Freddy's.

Oh, and I liked The Cabin the Woods. Obviously not scary, but it made fun of so many things I hate about horror films. And I do have a bit of a soft spot for the Hellraiser series--so bad it's good. I guess I just like the Cenobites.

One thing I keep hoping for is a scary sci-fi movie. (That isn't shot with handy cam). Like the first 30 minutes of Event Horizon, but for the whole movie. A good horror mystery--ya never see those anymore, and it kills me! It's all just slashers nowadays.

Oh, and martial arts/foreign films movies. Fuckin' looooove those. The Raid, The Man From Nowhere, Man of Tai Chi (Keanu fuckin' Reeves!), I Saw The Devil, Drug War. Oh, I could go on for ages. Red Cliff. Departures. Probably the best movie I've ever seen--no joke! Right up there with High & Low.
