Scoundrel from Diablo 3.
-snip-
Honorable mentions for James Vega, Lee Everett and Martin Walker.
The Diablo 3 art and dialogue is terrible though. Straight out of a bad comic book.

Also, James Vega? Are you trying to make a joke?
Yes, I would agree with on most of the D3 writing. However Scoundrel was the only one whose story and dialogue was leaps and bounds above the rest of the game. I can't say much about the art style, since I'm on the fence about it (doesn't fit Diablo series, but not bad on its own).

Scoundrel pretty much saved the whole game for me, and that's no easy feat.

As for James Vega, I like him. He's relaxed, has an anti-autorian streak and a mind of his own. Vega respects Shepard but doesn't cow to him. A bit like Jack, come to think of it, therefore it's no big surprise we got along.

I know he might be seen as boring, but is there a reason to actively dislike him? (apart from taking up space?)

Some fans find he's an unnecessary addition to the team, adding very little to team dynamics. We already have a tattooed antiauthoritarian rebel tough guy in the form of Jack, so it goes. Other fans find he lacks a compelling character arc, and when comparing him to - say - Mordin, Garrus or Thane, many argue he comes up a little "flat."

Haytham Kenway. Seriously, after playing as Connor for a few hours, I just wanted to return to Kenway. He is just so badass and flippant. I hope the next Assassin's Creed is a prequel of him in London or Paris.
Agreed, and after reading the accompanying book (which I advise all to do) his character has even more depth! (Forgive his dry British wit while he slices your neck open!)

I'm gonna cheat a little and say Chie Satonaka from Persona 4: Golden, reason being that I've never played original Persona 4 and Chie was completely new character for me, and boy, what an amazing character she was.

Vaas hands down for me since I did like handsome Jack a bit but when Vaas arrived that all changed.

Best character of 2012 imo.

I think we should just disqualify all the walking dead characters as their depth and emotional journeys eclipses that of any other character anybody could name that came out last year. To that end my favorite character of 2012 was Corvo Attano, the blandest mutherfucker in the game. That is truly an achievement in a game such as that and he should therefore be commended for it.

(braces for impact) Noel from 13-2

Handsome Jack

Although I do feel like walking dead should be banned from this discussion as most of the characters were great.

And I didn't talk to James much, so I can't say whether everything he says is bad. But did we really need another soldier in ME3? I think that even if he's as good as you describe that Jack or Wrex or Mordin or any other returning squad mate could have been better, seeing as we've developed them over two games already. It just strikes me as really bad planning when you have the most squad mates in me2. And then you introduce Hookerbot and Bulkhead in the third one.
Hey, I doubt James Vega was developing this game and decided on a whim to scrap the ME2 team. You can't blame Mr. McBeef for Bioware's mistakes, although I understand your irritation. While don't mind Miranda and Liara on their own, I hated how often they were featured during cutscenes and how they stole the spotlight from different characters. Doesn't mean its a personal character flaw, though.

There's far too little screen time for Vaas in Far Cry 3. I'm kind of hoping that...
...he comes back in some future game or DLC or something. The part where you kill Vaas is in some drug-fueled dream sequence so you don't really know if he's actually dead or you just imagined it.

Upon seeing the topic of this thread my mind instantly went to Clementine (and I stand by that as my choice), but it hadn't really occured to me how many great characters were introduced last year until I read some other responses.

Vaas, Handsome Jack, Raul Menendes, Corvo, and Connor have all become iconic in the months since their games were released.
Glad to see villains are making such a good show, too.
