Seeing as how it could be done with Link so easily that a simple gender swap would be the only requirement, I still think that's a perfectly good option.
Other games could/would require more work, but could still be done. Having a female lead in a CoD game would be cool, as would a Halo game that followed one of the female Spartans. Making Master Chief himself female would be silly as he's an established male character (unless it's just a female with some sort of voice filter in her helmet I guess), but there's definitely no restriction that keeps females from being Spartans.

I'd be curious to see what a female Travis Touchdown (Terry Touchdown? Tabitha Touchdown?) would be like. Would she exhibit female otaku and female bachelor stereotypes or would she be exactly like Travis.
Are we sticking to video game characters here because I know I've always wanted see the characters of My Little Pony genderbent. (You know, like what Adventure Time did with the Fiona and Cake episode.)

You gotta admit that would be really interesting since she would be treated far more differently by others. And really, is that not the interesting part of genderbending characters; to see what's different and what's the same about the character as well as seeing the double standards inherit with how we treat the sexes.

I'll admit I'd like to see female versions of Link and a Prince Zelda from nintendo themselves. Just out of curiosity to see how they would design them aesthetically.
But here's the thing: Hyrule is land apparently free of sexism, despite it's frequent commentary on racism, so thematically nothing would change. That's why so many people were indifferent to that idea I think. It wouldn't shake things up at all. It might look kinda cool though.

I echo this sentiment. There are A LOT of women in the military, including several marines, pilots and field medics. The lack of portrayal in these supposed 'modern military' shooters is just one check in the long list of things those games get wrong about the military. No one. Independent from my own opinions angry ranting on the lady link poll, I feel like gender-swapping is a terrible idea in general.
It's almost never done well, and is usually lazy and offensive.
Right now, I can't think of ONE time I've seen it well-done. Adventure Time's Fionna and Cake is not good, but does get a free pass for being a joke about fanfiction (and in universe, because it was written by the Ice King)

As a professional 3D modeler who minored in Modern Human Anatomy at University - your post intrigued me. I actually have an old 3D model of Master Chief on my computer (I had to create it in Blender for an old school project), so after I read your post, I decided to break it out and make a female version of the chief - just for the fun of it. The difference is striking, especially in the facial area (I did the most tweaking there). Quite a contrast, right?
