WoW was a lot like that for me. Just dicking around the world doing quests was not very exciting. Then I did a few instances and it got a lot better. Then I did my first raid and I was completely hooked.
that is how they get you, Damn, i spent nearly 5 years(give or take several months where i took breaks) playing that game. Blizzard i curse you for making such enjoyable games...

Fallout 3. When I was in the Vault I thought "Man, this game is dull" and the moment I stepped out I just thought "Whoa! This is sweet!"
Exactly the same for me, my good man.

Another would be Final Fantasy X but not right at the beginning. The beginning is awesome but then you end up in the temple and then on that ship with the Al Bhed and your mind would just turn to sludge.

It all got better when you drifted to Besaid, though. It's still my favourite game ever though so yeah...

Mass Effect. The first half of the game I didn't really care for it, the plot advanced really slowly and the combat was so-so, but by the time I got to Virmire, holy shit did it get better.

Heavy Rain is the obvious choice. Also, as for different games. I though God of War 1 was boring as shit but for some reason God of War 2 was so much better. Half Life 2 and Deadly Premonitions both fit into that category.

Half life 2

"Urgh, This sucks! I'm lost and I can't find that suit."

Three hours later:

Holy hell, Did I just take down a helicopter with a Boddamn airboat!?
Did you really not find the suit because one of my friends gave up on playing HL2 just because of that. I'm serious he actually never found the hazard suit.

I think a moment like that for me would have to be KOTOR 2 when I asembled the 3 jedi counsil members and I said stuff that pissed them off. They were saying stuff like

"you were blind"
While Kreia was saying stuff like
"and then you saw"

This carried on for a while and then the jedi took my force. When that happend Kreia walks in and then kills them in an instant in a very impressive scene. This in my eyes took a game that was pretty good to "Whoa holy hell this s**tz is on fire" good.

Ass. creed, DA: O, and a couple other games were kinda bland at first, but suddenly did a 180 and prompted me to ask "shit up my nose, when did this game get the right to kick ass?"

Portal at the end. Just simple puzzles, then BOOM! All of a sudden your killing GlaDoS. That is all.
Oh for.. thank you for the spoilers..

It'd have to be DA: O for me, altho I actualy liked the origins stories later on. The Ostagar part still bores me tho.

TES IV: Oblivion. Thought it was ok for a while then got bored. When I decided to play it again I didn't turn off my xbox for at least 200 hours.

Castle Crashers. My friend bought it when it first came out and it was just mediocre. But I played it again the other day and ended up buying it because it is so awesome.

Also, I had an inverse experience with left 4 dead. I was awesome at first, but after the first two play-throughs it got horribly, horribly bland.
