I've preordered it and I'm antsy with anticipation. I've played the Altar series of UFO games (Aftermath/Shock/Light) and they, while good in their own way, were not what I was looking for.

After I heard of the FPS they were bringing out I lost hope I'd ever see a worthy successor. It wasn't until a few days ago when I saw the trailer for the game that I nearly *squeeeee*d my eyeballs out.

I can't wait till my traditional first Captain, Cpt. Pattison and my first Sergeant, Sgt. Sark take down their first Sectoid scum!

shoot through enemy cover? even captcha is getting excited!

Okay, I'll be the first to admit that I never played the original X-Com.

Looking to rectify that though.

MEEEEE! (Edit: TOOOO!)

Actually looks a lot better than the original. The old X-Com games had a bad habit of devolving into exercises in logistics rather than tactics as the game progressed.

I'm looking forward to not having to shuttle people and supplies between three different bases and I'm liking the new soldier classes and skills.

you're in for a treat. A sweary, knuckle-clenching, keyboard-throught-the-window treat, but a treat nonetheless XD

I am! I never played the original, but I enjoyed the Ufo series and I loved UFO Alien invasion (a free game made on a quake engine)

And for all X-com fans, I'd recommend also looking at Xenonauts, an indie project which has also been around for a long time and is finally releasing on the same day as XCOM. I'm going to play both, since they both look awesome.

And on an unrelated note, dishonored releases the day after. I'm not going outside in october.

I've seen Xenonaughts and it looks amazing. Once I get paid, I'll preorder that because if there's any game developement underway right now that needs funding, its a dev team thats trying to bring an Xcom remake to life.

I hope Firaxis keeps the meatgrinder approach to troops as well. I started playing Xcom steam edition again and I just finished a mission with 8 lost troops and only two survivors: a Captain and a Sergeant who I'd gone through hell to keep alive.

No other tactical game replicates the feeling of relief and accomplishment you get from coming out of a mission alive, despite suffering 80% losses!

I'm cautiously optimistic, it's looking fairly good but how deep that rabbit hole really goes is yet to be determined.
The devs were also saying some pretty doddgy stuff for a while, such as "We just want to make things look cool"... now that could just be a marketing ploy but in most other cases that turned out to be the influence of idiots at the helm (DA2 being the most notable example).

Yeah, cautiously optimistic describes me as well. The new game looks great and I'm excited, but X-Com was arguably the best strategy game of all time. It has big shoes to fill.

It's going to be awesome. I like the idea of backup weapons (rocket launcher, stun pistol, etc...) working as abilities rather than gumpf you've got to fiddle about with. The lack of mobility of heavy weapons in all previous XCom & UFO titles always made them the red headed step-child of the available gear.

Looks alright.
Never played the original, and I get the feeling I won't like it if I try it, but this looks pretty good.

Rock paper shotgun has had a forty hour playtest:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/09/13/hands-on-forty-hours-with-xcom/

Preview code has been with me for a week now, allowing freedom of play up until a specific research-based cut-off point, and I?ve collected about forty hours of new stories. I want to tell you about the time my squad entered the burning ruins of a large UFO, searching the rooms slowly and methodically, travelling deeper into the interior, all smoke and the sinister glow of mysterious power sources. I want to tell you how they didn?t find a single living thing until they reached the very centre of the ship, how they heard the sound of movement and followed it.

Whatever was scurrying about in the wreck seemed to be on the run, perhaps the last survivor, an engineer or a pilot, not ready to face Earth?s best. Then I?d tell you how we lost track of whatever it was we were following and I?d gesticulate wildly as I told you how those men and women died, suddenly surrounded by noise as a trap was sprung, the broken ship now a tomb not for its crew but for us, for my people, for the poor bastards I failed.

It was chrysalids, you see, and they were coming out of not just the bloody walls but the bloody ceiling as well. It wasn?t a set piece though, they?d been waiting to strike and if I?d been smarter, I wouldn?t have sent my soldiers into that claustrophobic, smoke-filled labyrinth of twisted metal, I would have drawn whatever was inside out.

My sniper, who had been with XCOM since the very beginning, turned zombie on us and chewed the throat out of a young rookie. As the remaining members of the squad tried to blow a hole through the chitinous wave of death and devourance, one of them blew the ex-sniper?s infested guts out with a well-placed grenade. It didn?t feel right to leave her like that.

It feels so good to have new chrysalid stories, even if I?m still not entirely used to these scuttling insect incarnations of nineties nightmares. A terror mission turned from bug hunt to zombie horror when a pack of the blade-limbed monstrosities decided against peeling off our armour and instead darted down an alley to find softer, fleshier incubation chambers for their spawn. It didn?t take long for the civilians they discovered, the ones we were supposed to be protecting, to surround the grocery store in which we were taking cover, engaged in a deadly firefight with a gang of floaters. Then it was a case of cover-be-damned as eight hungry corpses bore down on our position. The dead don?t die easily and ammunition burned down quickly. The sound of each clip locking into place was like the cough that clears the throat at the beginning of a eulogy.

I'm really excited for this too but... is anyone even going to buy the FPS one? It looks like a crappy MIB to me.

It would sell better if they just dropped the Xcom name and used something like Xenoshock instead.

And no I'm not getting it.

I am excited for X-com although.

Never played an x-com game before, but I'll admit, this has me interested. Got a lot of other games I want coming out around then (Halo assassin's creed dishonored) and I'm short on cash though, so I may have to wait until later.
