PC definitely on Steam, but from what I've seen the only functional difference between versions is how you control the game.

Watching with interest, but not pre-ordered. Will probably wait for a price drop/sale on. Sorry, but I'm not really into strategy and I was literally not alive when the original was popular.

as consoles really dont work that well for turn based strategy
This is a myth actually. Turn-Based games have thrived on console for a long while now. In fact, the Japanese make a killing out of making turn-based games for the Playstation 3 and other consoles, with titles like Valkyria Chronicles (the closest analogue to this game), Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, the Disgaea franchise, Super Robot Wars, etc.

There's also the fact that the original X-COM: Enemy Unknown (with hyphen) was ported to Playstation in 1995 to no detriment of its tactical or strategic gameplay.

Finally, none of the limitations that prevent most Real-Time Strategy games from being successful on consoles, like the need to select and move multiple units with precision within a short amount of time, are absent in Turn-Based games due to their very nature of giving you all the time in the world to make an action, allowing control schemes with less buttons to work.

I am.
It's about time someone started making strategy games again.
Starcraft doesn't count, because it's realtime or strategy. Not both.

I own the first two X-Com games and I tried to like them, but I simply don't.

I'm excited for the new game, because it'll be more streamlined while keeping it's hardcore-ness of the original games and who knows, maybe it'll do the same that Fallout 3 and Civilization IV did for me with those franchises (I wouldn't have tried Fallout 1 & 2 or Civ 3 without those games).

I played it first hand at PAX, and I've got good news and bad news.

The bad news is it's not just a graphical and UI update for XCOM. So don't get your hopes up.

The good news is it's EVEN BETTER than the original in ALMOST every way.

Apparently being Psychic means you can't wield a gun anymore, but honestly, once you had a powerful psychic soldier in the original, did you EVER equip them with anything other than the amp and maybe a medkit?

Is this the strategy game X-COM or the FPS XCOM?

If the former: Not even remotely bothered in the slightest.
If the latter: Mildly intrigued, wasn't it delayed until next year/cancelled though?

Never played any X-COM game, but this actually got me interested.
From what I've seen and heard it looks really good.

God dammit you lucky bastard! I wish they would release a demo, I'd play the absolute shit out of it.

What happened to that other X-Com game that people thought was blasphemous because it was an FPS?

I think both games, FPS and TBS are getting developed under 2K's watch, but the TBS is the one a) everyone cares about and b) is close to being finished (as in its getting released within a months time).

I have no idea whats up with the FPS but now I know the TBS is coming and that it is very very likely to be awesome, I'm actually intrigued by it.

Yep, because it was still handy to have a gun in hand to kill extra aliens who you already used your mind control to disarm. You only need so many scouts at a time, so it's good to sometimes cull the herd. Getting psionic research by month 2, also known as how to make the alien invasion in the original xcom into a joke.

I had seen the game on Steam but had tried to push it to the back of my mind. Then PiCroft made this thread and it was all for naught, now I am really psyched for this game. There really is too few turn based squad combat games around these days.

So, if anyone is ordering this off steam, they've already hit stage 2 of the preorder rewards, which is the TF2 hats, next up is the free copy of Civ 5.

I know no-one cares about new TF hats, and I don't know how this translates into numbers of preorders, but since its only been available for preorder for a week or so, this is quite impressive.
