Chie Satonaka from Persona 4.
After playing Persona 3 and completely fallen in love with it, I was prepared for Persona 4 to disappoint me in comparison. Boy, did Chie proved me wrong. Even by now, I can't tell exactly why Chie resonated so good with me. She's not the prettiest, not the smartest, hell, not even the most unusual from Persona 4 cast, if anything, she's the most normal. And yet, she's so brave, energetic, charming, simple, kind and just bright! Chie is the brightest character I've ever seen! She never loses her spirit and she's always the one who says "come on guys! We can do it!". But, what I also really love, despite all that, I think that her Shadow and all the hidden feelings she has are just incredibly dark and it creates an amazing contrast to her character. Plus, she's just one kick-ass gal.
And also Erin Fitzgerald's performance as Chie really helped. She managed to perfectly convey Chie's character by her voice, it's loud, energetic, almost obnoxious even.

For sake of saving rant space, fucking this^ a million times. Chie was the first time in a JRPG I felt like I could relate to a character, because she acts the way I did when I was growing up. I was initially bummed when I heard P4 wouldn't have a female protagonist like P3P, but I'm now kinda glad I had to play as Yu, because Chie is adorable and I love her so much.

Kirby. Kirby's Dreamland 2 was the first game I truly delved into. It was the game I played all day before games like Morrowind existed (and that I was aware of). Was also the first game that was mine. Before that I played my mom and dad's NES and Genesis games. Kirby will always be my number one character...and my main in SSB :p

For the sake of being slightly different, I really like Shirogane Naoto.

I just sort of understand wanting to have people accept you for yourself and to have a place. Plus I really find her endearing in her social awkwardness and inability to read the air.

(I will admit that Chie is cute and Yui Horie acting the bubbly fun personality helps and she actually gets the torment across during the scene with the shadow)

Where would the world be without BlazBlue's Hazama? Just watching Hazama walking around being evil makes my day in a second. I really wish I could play him but he requires epic troll powers I unfortunately do not possess to play him well.
Good god, yes, Nakamura is just awesome at getting the pure utter hate and insanity across in his speech and he can also switch back to the lackadaisical tone of voice if needed (a part of me wants to cosplay as him complete with fake butterfly knives and ouroboros but the Japanese voice would be hard to replicate for hours on end, especially the Terumi voice)

Runners up are: Naoto Shirogane from Persona 4, Yosuke Hanamura from Persona 4, Chie Satonaka from Persona 4, maybe Noel from BB? Depending on who you are she's either really cute or really gosh darn irritating. All I know is her relationship with Bolverk is interesting and her playstyle revolves around autocombos and random supers. We like this :3
See my other post for my opinion on Naoto. Youske is interesting as Morikubo's voice is a bit hard to get past but it makes his stupid comedy comments across well.

Noel, well, I like Koudou-san's voice as it gets across the sort of insecure voice with a bit of conviction well (I also find the character so cute given her reactions to the kaka kittens and the panda along with her awkwardness in the academy and the field)

Still the same as last time I saw this topic pop up: April Ryan from The Longest Journey.

If you're a fan of story in games or even just a good story in general, you're doing yourself a disservice by not having played this classic. Easily my favourite adventure game of all time despite its often shoddy mechanics simply for the quality and sheer heart of its story and cast.

I was going to predict a landslide of people voting for Gordon Freeman, since he always seems to get a thousand shout-outs in character appreciation threads, despite not being an actual character in the traditional sense. I was already too late. XD

as for favorite characters... ehhh... that's kind of hard. there are so many different types of characters who fill a variety of needs for the plot that you can't really lump them all together and pick a single representative.

For instance, my favorite lead character is Yuri Lowell from "Tales of Vesperia" He served so many roles and was astoundingly well written. He almost seemed to deconstruct the notion of a typical JRPG protagonist, but was only genre savvy enough to help pull the player in, without reaching Deadpool levels of meta-awareness.

My favorite villain is Mr. House from Fallout: New Vegas, because he had a complete economical and sociological philosophy behind his actions, and while narcissistic, he came across as genuinely having the best interests of the mojave at heart, so he was a compelling, sympathetic, and deep villain.

there are probably a good half-dozen such categories for me... I'll need to give the question more thought.

Either Glados or Cave Johnson from Portal 2.
The P4 cast,Pheonix Wright/Miles Edgeworth combo and Missile from Ghost Trick come close but in the end I don't think anything can surpass the perfectly written Portal stars.

If I may include characterization from tie-in books, then Catherine/Katran from Myst gets my vote.

If we're talking merits of the game alone, I really enjoy Laverne from Day of the Tentacle.

http://lparchive.org/Day-of-the-Tentacle/Images/2-Dott02.png

The blonde one.

Everything you need to know about her can be gathered from that picture and this exchange:

Doctor: "OK, Human. It's time for your examination."

Laverne: "ARE YOU GOING TO USE YOUR SCALPEL!?"

Doctor: "That would be unnecessary."

Laverned: "Darn... DO YOU WANT TO USE MINE!?"

She's so wonderfully creepy in a way that I still would hang out with her.

Been said before, but Solid Snake. He puts up with so much shit, but forgives people and continues on. Even if they tried to kill him.
Another favourite, would have to be Basch from Final Fantasy XII, who also has a douchebag twin brother just like Snake.
Oh and let's not forget Cecil Harvey, regretful Dark Knight turned Paladin.
To the moon, Cecil, to the moon!
