DCI Gene Hunt

In Life on Mars he was the hardass who got the job done and then in Ashes to Ashes he was painted as the villian until being revealed as the true hero of the series

And he did it with a chest full of smart remarks
Now that's a man who can get the job done!

And I'm gonna have to back Jonathan Creek. Not the greatest, but it's just so fun a series to watch, and it's pretty different.

Dirk Gently I guess, from Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglass Adams. That or Thursday from The Man Who Was Thursday by GK Chesterton.

Samuel Vimes of course.
Yeah that was surprising.
Damn you for beating me to it.
I was *this* close to answer "Corporal Nobby" !

And my second favorite detective is Jimmy McNulty ! And/or The Bunk !

He gets the job done, one way or another. But he still knows how to behave in front of the civilians.

Honorable mentions to Adam West's Batman and the Green Hornet.

Edit: I don't care if I was ninja'd. My picture is better.

Ahh, but we all know that Sergeant Colon is the real expert on this detectoring business!

Jack Frost. Reminds me a bit of myself sometimes. Precieved on the outside as a snappy/sarcastic cold bastard, while deep inside he actually cares (too) much about things but doesn't want to show it.

I love Sherlock as a character, not so much as a detective.
Batman is getting tiresome for me, but the lessons it taught me get honourable mention.
L, pretty much the entire deathnote series is more twisted, conniving and multi-layered than Lost, and still makes sense.
Rorsach, nuff said.
Robocop He's a policebot.
