Title Says it all.

My personal favorite is Stanley Kubrick by far, he made many of my fvorite movies like Full Metal Jacket, Clockwork Orange, and especially Dr, Strangelove.

Quentin Tarantino and Steven Spielberg are close runner ups as well.

Johnny Woo.

Hard Boiled is one of the greatest action movies ever. He managed to pull of the mind blowing hospital action scene. If you have seen the movie you know what I am talking about
Of course I have seen it, I recommended it to you.

But nothing is better than Edward Norton.

What is that, you say? He hasn't directed any great films? You are right. But he has directed a film! Therefore he is a director. And since he is my favorite actor, I can put him under favorite Director too.

In before someone else mentions him: Ridley Scott.

Motivation: Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator. Pure visual poetry.

Martin Scorsese. Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Departed, Gangs of New York, Casino. He gets the most out of his actors.

Ridley Scott just makes awesome movies.

Spielberg's work is always good. His films are incredibly varied and the "lesser" films by him are often the best. Munich, Minority Report, The Terminal are all incredibly under-appreciated in my opinion.

It's a really tough toss-up between Wes Anderson and Joel Coen.

Both have excellent bodies of work that really appeal to that strange sense of humour deep down inside of me while simultaneously juxtapositioning moments that tug at just about all of my emotions.

The like the Hughes Brothers.
Tarentino will be mentioned A LOT by many people in this thread.
Scorcese has never let me down.

My overall favorite though: Zack Snyder.

EDIT: Joss Whedon is pretty cool too.

Michael Mann!

He's not the best director ever, nor are all his films fantastic. But in the era of the Baysplosion I am more grateful than can be imagined for a person who produces big budget action movies that are still clever, well written and have a degree of subtlety to them.

I'm surprised to be the first to say Tim Burton.

I'm an art nerd so good visual style means a lot to me. And he is one of the best.

hitchcock is another favorite as well.

Kubrick for The Shining, Full Metal Jacket. James Cameron for The Terminator and T2, maybe for Avatar, I thought that film was pretty "meh".
