Iji Kataiser

One of few remaining humans after an alien invasion(Nearly 95% death rate). She doesn't take the knowledge of the near genocide of Earth very well but she has trouble actually killing any of them. You can play through the entire game without killing a single foe and she will become more confident in her belief that there doesn't need to be more bloodshed. If you kill one of the aliens intentionally or accidentally she'll even apologize for doing it for the first few times. Or you can have her take revenge on the invaders. Eventually she'll be reveling in destroying every last Tasen she comes across if you take it far enough yelling out "Die!" as she kills any in her way.

Someone in her position would probably have a fragile mental state, and it does show. She hallucinates finding bows that her younger sister used to wear. She flat out breaks down after learning how badly earth's been hit. There's a certain point in the game where depending on how you handle a situation she can completely snap and start talking to people that aren't there.(The last boss notices this and takes pity on you if you reach him in that state)

Nah it's cool, you're staying on topic with your ramble, which is better than many on this site can say. xD

To give the Marine the benefit of the doubt, it might be that he was simply surprised that a 2nd Lieut was in charge of everything, considering how lowly a rank that is. That it wasn't a "but you're a girl" angle, so much as a "how the hell is someone so far down the chain of command in charge?!" kind of reaction. I can't remember if the Marines had been told of the name/rank of the person in charge up to that point or not.

Samus has always been my favourite, followed by Jade from beyond good and evil. Mostly play mmos though, so I am the heroine :D

edit: which game is she from arkliem?

My absolute favorites tend to be the create your own variety like Elder Scrolls/Bethesda/Oblivion or Bioware games. Otherwise I kind of have characters I like but none of them are protagonists...

-Ellie from Dead Space 2 (NOT Dead Space 3, she was really annoying in 3)
-Mary Reed from Black Flag
-Lulu from FFX
-Rose from Legend of Dragoon

Jade from beyond good and evil, for all the reasons that's been said already. A really charming and capable character who got you invested in everyone nad everything else in the game.

Her speech to woof after a certain point in the game is pretty heartbreaking.

Recette, Tear and Nagi from Recettear.

Recette and Tear are a fun double act, with recette full of energy and optimism, and tear with her dry, weary manner is the perfect foil.

And nagi... Well, shes Osaka with a naginata. Fun to use, and a really funny personality to have in the game

What is really weird about that whole thing is that in 40k women very explicitly ARE part of the Imperial Guard. In huge numbers. Often in dedicated regiments.

It seems entirely possible they were going for the "lowly Lieutenant" thing. Or simply trying to exaggerate that they were expecting someone rather more flamboyant than the hard-as-nails, down to Terra person they ran into; given that this IS 40k where your authority is directly proportional to the size of your pauldrons and fanciness of your hat. But it did come off a little unfortunately if that IS what whty were going for.

Either Celes or Yuna from FF6 and 10.

I actually really started to like the Bayonetta character in Bayonetta 2 as well, she had a lot more personality than in the first game. Of course, it helps when the game is a masterpiece too.

Everyone here is naming a bunch of characters from a bunch of games that I have never played and the first character that pops into my mind is Red. Not sure why. I wouldn't say that she's devoid of personality. But it certainly is a little hard to tell. I just like playing as her. No real justification.
Red from Transistor? Good pick, she's a good character. No shame in that.

For me, it's probably Beatrice the Golden Witch from Umineko No Naku Koro Ni.

What? It's a visual novel, it counts!

I'd also say The Boss from MGS3 Snake Eater. While Snake is the main protagonist of that game, I'd argue that the Boss is the Deuteragonist of story.

Shiki!!!!

[Snippy Snippy Piccy Piccy]

Goddammit, shes a friggen pirate!!

[Snippy Snippy Piccy Piccy Part Deux]

Her scythe is also a lot of fun. She is pure win against mobs. Bosses not always, but still fun as hell.
But...but the valley girl! The valley girl.

Can't stand it.

Gimme Hikage's deadpan delivery, Mirai's otaku delusions, or Homura's lame food-oriented jokes any day.

Pretty much all the females from FF IX. They're strong, developed, human and very likable.

There's Garnet, probably one of the only princess characters in any medium ever for whom it makes sense to be a princess AND she actually becomes a queen halfway through the game. She is a bit sheltered and makes some poor choices because of that. She's flawed, but sympathetic. Vulnerable, but strong-willed.

http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130321045317/finalfantasy/images/thumb/e/e8/Garnet_Til_Alexandros_XVII_character.jpg/120px-Garnet_Til_Alexandros_XVII_character.jpg

Then there's Freya, probably my favorite female character of all time. She's a dragon knight, honorable and just - but she also really likes going for a cold pint in some back alley bar. She's kind and helpful, but she has attitude (and she will laugh in your face if you do something stupid). She has two arcs going on. The first is returning to her homeland after years of absence when she hears her nation is being attacked. The second is looking for the man she loved, who is rumored to be dead (hence the three years away).

Two things baffle me about this characters. One, the amount of loss she has to face, yet powers herself through it, even if she breaks down, when shit hits the fan, she puts everything aside and just goes for it. Two, her second arc is one about love, but not really in a way you would expect for a character like this. It's the woman going all, traveling the continent to find her long lost love. Even worse, when she finds him, the douche can't even remember her. Hell, it's not even as if she's a streotypically attractive female: she's an anthropomorphic rat - not some 'cat-girl' that's basically just a human with a tail and cat ears, but a full blown humanoid rat. And it's not like they try to sexualize this: she's skinny, has long nails and wears a thick all-concealing coat. Generally, these aren't the kind of characters that get to have the dramatic love arc.

Then there's Eiko... But I rather talk about Beatrix. General of the Alexandrian army and all around badass. She is strong as all hell (she actually beats you three times throughout the game), but she's also clever and is willing to process new information given to her. This is also why she ends up joining your cause.

http://gaspull.geeksaresexytech.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/general-beatrix-4.jpgI could have gone for another CG pic, but then I saw this cosplay and thought: "this'll do just fine".

Lol, I'd party with her :)
But seriously, don't misjudge her. Her knowledge of the heart sutra tells me there is more to the valley girl than meets the eye :)

This is a no-brainer for me: Samus. Grew up absolutely loving Super Metroid, and Prime became a fast favorite when that came out. After Samus, probably Terra from Final Fantasy 6. Despite having an ability I didn't really use that often (even though it was sick OP when used right), she was always a mainstay character for me whenever I had the option of party customization.

I quite liked Miranda from Mass Effect 2. I liked the one line she said in particular "Cerberus doesn't tell me I can't do something, they just give me my resources and tell me to get it done" or something like that. It set up her whole philosophy really well.

I may be playing fast and loose with the word "protagonist" here... Honestly I like quite a few. If we're strictly talking pc then Clem takes it hands down. If not, Anaya and Sam from Gears 3. They are all great for different reasons, and there are so many more I didn't mention.

Aye, good point about the sutra. She's got depth just like the rest of the cast. :p

And, yes, the pirate-witch-reaper get-up is still awesome.
