I made a question asking for black protagonists(its for a video im making) and I was going to ask for female protagonists but there are obviously alot more female mains. So I was wondering if it would be easier to just narrow it down to your favorites? This is games with character customization, the female must be a protagonist or in a main cast.

Not counting Shepard I would say either Jill Valentine or Lian Xing from Syphon Filter.
Oh and just for fun my favorite Black protagonist is Major Jackson Briggs.

The last 2 great Female protagonists I've played are escalated in my esteem by how much I enjoyed the game in general. Otherwise, it would be Wonder Woman from Injustice.
Lara Croft:Tomb Raider. As good or better than Uncharted. I had a blast playing that through.
The female I had be the main character in Skyrim. Awesome game. And I spent 100 hours with her.

The one that came to mind most immediately to me was Clementine from Tell Tale's The Walking Dead seasons 1 & 2.
I can't really think of many protagonists I like without thinking of the game they are in which is what I really like. The protagonist in a game can't really be good without being in a good game. With that caveat:
Samus (metroid series), Jade, (beyond good and evil) Femshep (Mass effect). I quite liked freddy fish (game also called freddy fish) when I was younger.

Thinking of these two was hard enough. It's sad that I thought of tons more awesome female protagonists, who happen to star in anime, books, etc and so few in games.
Even then, Xion is hardly a protagonist (more just a main cast member). Basically I like female characters who contribute to the plot.

Even then, Xion is hardly a protagonist (more just a main cast member). Basically I like female characters who contribute to the plot.
Either Lara (voiced by Keeley Hawes) when she had a sense of humour and didn't sound like a American teenager pretending to be British and an actual English Lady. And was the stereotypical angsty 'strong' archetype with no discernible personality of her own. At last Kelley had sense of humour. (And in 'serious' stories humour is more important it adds relief and contrast to all the 'mature' stuff)
Or Moira from Revelations 2, something about her I just like, not only does she have the best line of swearing in anything other adds some actual contrast to Claire's indifference to the zombies. Also she never got too whiny or angsty and was occasionally funny.

cause YES!! Aya Brea is my number one hero, full-stop, the fact she's a badass woman/cop with crazy powers is a bonus
as for the topic i'd also like to submit Kaine from Nier and Zero from Drakengard, but you don't get to see them as more then crazy homicidal lunatics unless you play the 'true endings' of those games... still amazing characters

still, Aya's a great character, period, and from the far off land of 1998 before all this shenanigans about 'female protagonists' and stuff, being a woman and kickass didn't make her great, she was just a good character period and that's the important thing...I well pick some protagonists off the beaten path.
1. Emma (not Emmy, her daughter) Honeywell from the Last Remnant.
"One of the Four Generals of Athlum, Emma is the matriarch of the Honeywells, a clan that has served Athlum for many generations. A brave warrior, she leads troops into battle with courage and vigour. She is always trying to better herself and others, while continually striving for justice. Despite her stern exterior, she is a strong maternal figure to Lord David, and looks after him as if he were her own son. "
and she kicks so much ass. She is also mature enough to admit when she is wrong or misjudge a character. Tough, but fair.
2. Chris Lightfellow from Suikoden 3.
Another knight character. She is uncomfortably with how her subordinates and in fact her entire country puts her on a pedestal just for doing her duty. The fact that everyone looks up to her as a hero conflicts with her feelings about some of the actions she is ordered to take. mild spoiler ahead.

She also has to come to terms with the fact that she killed a child (like 10 years old or something) during battle. The child was a close friend to the son of one of the Clans she would later have to work with.
