Okku from the Mask of the Betrayer expansion for Neverwinter Nights 2 is my favorite companion in any RPG ever (Aside from HK-47). Not sure why, I just like the character and not to mention..

He is literally a giant bear god. Yeah.

My favourite character Francis York Morgan from "Deadly premonition" I just think he is awesome, just because he doesn't really care what people think about him and he marches to the beat of his own drummer really. I like that in a character. That, and he is just so wonderfully eccentric, from getting premonitions in his coffee, to talking to his imaginary friend, I just think he is a great character :)

Hands down, Auron from Final Fantasy X. Cool, knowledgeable and a good personality. Not to mention serious ass-kicking abilities. What more could you need.
Seconded. Him and Rikku I think.

I'm going to go for kreia From KOTOR2, sure that game had it's share of problems, but my god the characters were some of the most interesting i've ever encountered in a RPG.

It's easy for a character to make you question your actions when you have done something evil, but What other character can actually make you doubt your own moral choices when all you have done is helped someone?

WHISTLING TIME!

All time?

Shit.

I dunno.

Probably Sazh from FF13 at this point. Or Ryudo from Grandia 2. Or Shale from Dragon Age.

DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE!

I'm gonna go with the badass Solid Snake, he's been kicking ass even into his old age and defeated clones and his dad several times! And lets face it, he's rather attractive.
And he looks badass even with a rainbow in the background.

Oh no! I just got that out of my head! I will now drive my roommates nuts by whistling it over and over for the rest of the week!

John Marston. One of the only characters in a game I cared about and felt for. Not so over the top that it's ridiculous, and not so much of a wuss that you want him to shut up. He was perfectly voice-acted, and felt like a real person.

He was simple, yet wasn't a one-note character. Take a hint, developers.

Jack from Mass Effect 2.

Probably the most well-rounded character I've encountered in the medium.

I'd also like to mention April Ryan of The Longest Journey and Isabela in Dragon Age 2.
